Is the entire 86 vol. Charles Spurgeon worth the money?

Hello everyone,
I was considering on buying the Charles Spurgeon collection (86 vols.) for $699.95
Is it worth the money?
But I was considering on buying the discounted works (Lectures to my Students, The Treasury of David, My Sermon Notes) of Spurgeon that are offered through the "March Madness" program. Is this the better option? Please give me some personal opinions.
Thanks.

Well, I do love Spurgeon, but that is pretty steep. In my opinion, the main thing I want in Spurgeon are his sermons. Spurgeon is first and foremost a preacher. I have all his sermons in Logos now, and I paid about $500 less than this price.
Does this collection include all of his sermons? I am not sure.
I would like to add Spurgeon's Lectures to my Students and The Treasury of David to my collection, but I will get those through March Madness.
His biographies do not particularly interest me in Logos format. A book like that I had rather read in paper / book form.
So for me the answer would be "No, this collection is not worth $600." I would just buy his sermons and add the others that I mentioned in March Madness. But for others, the answer may be yes. We are all different.

BTW, Spurgeon's sermons are in this $97 collection: http://www.logos.com/products/details/888
The two collections together constitute his entire works, I think.

I agree Michael. I am finding it kind of hard or uneasy myself trying to read books in Logos format. Nothing like a book with real pages.

Yeah Todd,
I think I'm leaning on the decision of buying Spurgeon's sermons and whatever else is offered of him in March Madness instead.

I reluctantly dropped the pre-pub 86-vol. Spurgeon collection due to budget constraints. One thing that made the decision palatable was that I have his sermons, and I agree that Spurgeon's sermons are what I really cherish. The March Madness offerings will be great additions. For $700, there are too many other Logos offerings to spend that money on the Spurgeon collection, IMO. Always having to deal with opportunity cost.

I guess it paid off for me to mention this Spurgeon 86 vol. collection in the forums!
Logos emailed me and gave me an offer for the entire collection for $329.95! Yes!
I had to grab it. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.
Thanks Logos!!!! [:D]

I'd be VERY interested in this offer also ;-)

Just curious did this price include the sermon collection also ?

That would certainly make it worth owning. The sermon collection is primary to me.

I got this email too, and I'm jumping on it too, even though it will mean the March Madness Spurgeon discounts are moot. I think it was an exclusive offer to certain people with certain library levels maybe? I've got Portfolio. What do you have? If this theory is correct then that's another reason it pays to upgrade to higher library levels when you can.

No. The sermon collection is separate from the 86 volume collection.

Troy, this seems like the kind of collection that will go on sale at some point. So either hold off and wait for that, or pick up the pieces of it that you like the most. It looks like the Logos March Madness is gonna hook you up with some pretty good spurgeon discounts.
Spurgeon is one of my favorite authors and I picked this up on prepub for quite a discount and I have loved it, but there are certainly pieces of the package that are better than others (you identified them in your post).
More than anything though, you'll probably want to pick up his sermons. That's where I'd put my money first. I love to read what Spurgeon has to say on a passage after I've studied it.
So is it worth it? Yes. But could you use your money better than putting out $700 for the collection? probably

I'm afraid the theory is incorrect. I too have Portfolio, and all I got was an offer on New Unger's Bible Dictionary

I have L4 Platinum, and for whatever reason, I'm glad I've not received that offer. I have no need for additional temptation. [;)]

Absolutely. I there was a non-random criteria, I think I was left out on the basis that Logos knew they'd already bled my try with L4 and Zondervan and all the other nice prepubs coming up!

Ha ha. Yeah, we were tempted with a full array of Logos CDs (at a discount for seminar attendees) on the book table there, and I walked away with four of them. Still have yet to make use of the new titles, so I certainly don't need to be buying anything else new in the near future! But then March Madness came and hit me up for some more bucks. Sigh. The problem with having a bit of extra disposable income is you end up disposing of it. [:S]

I own Portfolio, and all I got was a discount offer for BDAG+HALOT. Not sure why I need to buy another copy of something I own...would much rather get offers for things I don't have.

If Logos employees are reading this and wondering if anyone else wants the Spurgeon Collection for the reduced price, my pastor and I are interested! We were both bummed that we didn't get the Spurgeon Collection when it was on Pre-Pub, but at the time we were still new to Logos and learning how the program works, pre-pub works, and community pricing. If that offer comes up again, then we definitely both want to get it.

Why don't you ring sales and ask them for the code?

I was told that the magazines "Sword and Trowel" are just simply sermons by Spurgeon. What would be the use of that, if you get the Spurgeon Sermons Collection. I could see your need for the Sermons Collection if you had the Sword and Trowel, since the Sword and Trowel would not have ALL of his sermons, but if you already have the sermon collection, is there any use for the Sword and Trowel? Perhaps a better deal just to get the March Madness Spurgeon titles, and then get the Sermon Collection?
EDIT: Never mind. On Logos website of the collection it already gives this detail...
The Sword and the Trowel, the monthly magazine edited by Spurgeon, began publication in 1865. It contains articles, tracts, poetry, and book reviews, along with regular statistics and detailed reports and reflections on his sermons. Most importantly,The Sword and the Trowel provides a rich source of biographical material on Charles Spurgeon and the context of his ministry. It is an illuminating inside look at the week-to-week happenings at the Metropolitan Tabernacle.
