Indexing problem
Yesterday I gave my laptop running Vista the whole day to update and index Logos 4 - it never finished. Today I started over and at 10:24 it said "indexing 1 hr 3 min remaining" At 11:39 it said "indexing 5 hrs remaining" Now at 12:11 it says "indexing 6 hours remaining" Nothing else is running on this laptop - just Logos 4

Now I'm in a fix, the laptop won't even turn off - if you right click on the logos icon in the systray is that supposed to bring up a menu? How can I stop the indexing function and turn off the computer? Even task manager won't launch.

if you right click on the Logos icon in the system tray (right lower side of most windows layouts) then a pop-up should show. It should give you the option of disabling the Indexing for 4 hours. If you do that, then you could close the computer down and Indexing should start the next time you start windows.
Edit: sounds like your system is extremely busy. So when opening the Task Manager may take several minutes to appear.

What are the specs of your laptop?
Do you have another, more powerful computer, that runs L4?

At home I'm running L4 on a dell inspiron 1526 with a AMD Athlong 64 X2 Dual Core Processor TK-57 1.90 GHz with 4 GB RAM and Vista 32 bit - I will have to check at work, it is a rebuilt Acer that I just bought - also running Vista. I called support and first made sure the power settings were set to: sleep - never, and then entered the rebuild index command and left the office so the system could run overnight - I'll see later if it completed the task.

If you're in a situation where you can't even turn off your computer or launch the task manager, something must have hung. You usually can turn off the computer by holding down the on/off key for at least 3 seconds or more (depending on the manufacturer).

Yes, after waiting to see if task manager would come up I eventually just shut it down and started over - I was worried I might corrupt an update file so I didn't do that until all hope was lost!

I was heading to a suggestion that you use one faster/reliable computer to download and build your index, then backup the installation and use it on the other computer via Method 2 at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers as this avoids downloading and indexing, taking about 1 hour max!

Thanks for the tip - I'm going to try that in the future. My program on the Acer computer finally finished indexing and judging by the time stamps on the files in the index folder it took it little over 7 hours.

If you had logging enabled you can find the exact time from the logos4Indexer.log file!

You can judge from your "Master" computer how long indexing will take because it may be more effective to use Method 3 for smaller downloads (once you have cloned the indexes with Method 2).

I just did an update on my faster computer and checked out the suggestion for migrating that to my slower laptop - method 2 says
Method 2 (for Custom installation of 4.0b only)
This is similar to Method 1 but takes advantage of a new feature in 4.0b.
Do not delete the {random} folder itself, only its sub-folders!
* backup a full working installation ...\Logos4\ to an external driveIs there a command within the program to do that or do I simply copy user\name\appdata\local\logos4 and all subdirectories to my external drive?
