How to navigate in Text Comparison tool

Hi,

I've got the text comparison tool open in the same pane that I use for Bibles. (I don't want it open at the same time as Bibles, but instead of them - and it skips verses when scrolling on 'follow' too, so doesn't work well like that since only one verse is shown.) However, when I go to text comparison, I cannot navigate to any other verse other than typing in a new reference in the refence box. This means that I have to type in a new reference each time I want to navigate verse by verse!! I've tried arrow and page up/down keys, but nothing works.

Also, there is only one verse displayed. I know that there were problems with whole books being cached and slowing things down, but it seems like the other extreme now, where I'm looking as a single verse and a lot of white space. Can it not just fill in the visible space and then update it when scrolled up or down or a new ref is chosen?

Has anyone got a solution to navigating verse by verse in the text comparision tool? Or even seeing multiple verses when in 'follow' mode?

By design the text comparison tool follows an open Bible's navigation dialog. I have seen it follow a verse range, when that range is in a commentary. So I know it's possible.

In the configuration button on the left of the TC tab are some options. If you set the link sync with your Bible (e.g. set both to "A"), if you type a range in your Bible passage dialog, and press enter, that range will be compared in the TC tool. If you then set your Bible to navigate by verse you can use the Bible pane's down arrow to make the TC go to the next verse.

If you set the sync to "None" you can type a range in the TC tool navigation dialog and it will display that range.

The tool itself does not have a way to automatically to to the next/previous verse.

a) Link your Bible and the Text Comparison together (i used A)

b) Set the navigation granularity to Verse. When you click on the navigation arrows (up/down) to move to the next verse, it will move the TC to the next verse. (see Navigating
a Resource (controls in the Locator bar) ) This is new with 4.0b

it will force you to view each verse at the top of your Bible, as the navigation arrow repositions that verse at the top of your Bible.

Thanks for the info. I'm not using a verse range, but scrolling in a Bible which is my standard way to work - so it skips verses since the Bible is in paragraph mode. I've searched in several places for how to set the Bible to verse by verse navigation, and I've given up as I've not been able to find how to do that. It may be there, but I feel frustrated and stupid as once again I can't find how to do something on my own that I think should be there, or that I know is there somewhere (as you indicate, and as I'm using the latest non-beta version), even after looking in the Help for details. I'm giving up on this for now - sorry.

Thanks for your time and effort in explaining that. Yes, I've got that working now.

It's just a shame that such frustration and time and some searches or posts on the forum are needed to do things that should be so much easier to pick up. I love the resources in Logos, but using L4 is too often just not a pleasant experience, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, this does not always work. It works when each verse is displayed at the beginning of a new line. But where a verse starts part way into a line, with a previous verse starting the line, and a subsequent verse starting the next line, then the verse is skipped. The up/down arrow jumps to the verse that begins the top line at the position where the screen has jumped to, which on my display is more than one line of text at a time. It does not navigate to the next verse. While it appears to do so in many instances, it is simply scrolling down, and seeing what verse is at the start of the top line. I have a wide pane, which makes the problem more noticeable. If a narrower pane is used, then there is more likelihood of an average
verse being at the start of a new line at some point or another.

Try it with John 11:33ff. In my display, it not only skipped the short verse (Jesus wept), but since the display jumped more than one line of text when it scrolled down the navigation skipped from John 11:33 to John 11:38 (as displayed on the navigation box) on pressing the down arrow only once. The text comparison followed accordingly, leaving out four whole verses.

But do you get the same with v35 which is only two words? If you do, try resizing your pane so that v35 begins and finishes in the middle of a line, and see what happens. Or rezise your pane much wider and see if it works on the shorter verses. If your text font is small, you may even find, like me, that the down arrow skips a line.

Are you clicking on the up/down arrow in the locator bar or using the keyboard up/down arrow? As long as I'm clicking in the locator bar the verse selection is faultless, no matter which version I use or where v35 is located.

Thanks Dave, you're right.

I was clicking on the keyboard up and down arrows. I see that if I use Alt + up or down arrows on the keyboard, it does the same as clicking the arrows on the pane using the mouse.
