Progress report?

I was looking for dialogues using a literary types search today and got this (for Genesis - 1 Kings):

Looks to me like only some books have been tagged and not others.

I know that tagging has been progressive with regard to some datasets and resources. Where can users turn to at any given time to have an up-to-date account of where this or that is at?

Literary Typing does not comprehensively tag all possible items at all possible locations, but when it was created it annotated the most salient option at each point. Since its initial publication (back in the Libronix DLS days) the only updates we've made have been to bring parity between OT Quotes and Allusions noted by Literary Typing and OT Quotes and Allusions noted by the NT Use of the OT dataset.

On dialogue, Reported Speech is probably the better option to pursue. In the NT, you might also be able to leverage the Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament's use of "Quotative Frames" and "Dialogic Frames".

Making sure I understand what you mean: do you mean to say that in Numbers, for instance, Dialogue is not one of the most salient literary types and that other more salient literary types were tagged instead? Or what do you mean by "at each point"? For instance, how does it apply in the case of a dialogue such as Numbers 11:10–23?

On dialogue, Reported Speech is probably the better option to pursue.

Thank you for the suggestion. Which dataset is Reported Speech part of? I am finding it challenging to find out which set to turn to for narrative categories. I am looking for stuff such as speech, dialogue, expositional information, author intrusions, etc.

The Reported Speech dataset is listed in Help >> About Logos under the heading Speaker labels i.e. it is used in resource Visual filters for Addressee labels and Speaker labels. It is searched using {Addressee <Person xxxx>} or {Speaker <Person xxxx>}

Thanks, Dave. Good idea to look up under help/about. I should keep that in mind.

This is where the lack of operators to look for all instances hurts. It is just not practical for the kind of work I do (with a large scope) to search each speaker individually.

The original work involved individual effort for the Old Testament (Tooman) and New Testament (Mackie), and it was done probably 10–12 years ago. These were not comprehensive analyses of dialogue in Scripture (or prose, or poetry, or legal genres, or sagas, or anything); they were analyses of the original contributor of what they saw as the literary function of the portion of Scripture they were annotating. At least that's my understanding; I wasn't involved in the original analysis so I don't know all the details or goals of that analysis.

Makes one wonder whether Literary Typing must be revamped. It is one of the features that was sold to customers but it is evidently quite incomplete.

As I recall, it was originally intended to provide an analysis of literary genre at the passage and verse level, but that's not what it turned out to be. We've long wanted a formal genre analysis, and some of the recent Longacre genre stuff starts us on that path.
