Restarting Indexing

I have seen this in the Mac forum, but not in the Win forum for L4.

If I have to stop indexing for whatever reason, or shut down my computer, how may I restart the indexing process?

Also, on my laptop, if I "hybernate" the computer, does this successfully pause the indexing. The reason I have tried this in the past is I may need to pick up and move or go home with my laptop and I wan the indexing service to continue when I get home.

Your help is appreciated.

If you shut down your computer indexing will begin from "start" ie start all over again when you next turn on the computer.

I "hybernate" the computer, does this successfully pause the indexing

If you merely hibernate, then indexing will also hibernate and not lose its place.

[i am willing to be corrected if any of these procedures have been recently changed]

Thanks for replying, Steve. It may be a bug, but it didn't restart for me and I know my index is out of date, as I have purchased new resources. Any help would be appreciated.

From personal experience I would not use the rebuild index or the merge index commands. When your new resources get to be around 25% of your total the program will re-index, until then you will have two sets of search results.

Indexing continues to be a challenge to the L4 developers. They do realize that things are not working correctly.

In the present beta, they have had to disable the "merge" command. It now does a total re-index.

My only other suggestion would be to go to the wiki (adress at top oof page) find the instructions for turning on logging.

Perhaps if some logs were posted people might be able to diagnose what has happened or is (not) occuring.

I expect this index problem will continue for the next while, because they are still going to have to try out any new fixes on the beta channel before they release them here to the rest of the L4 users.

There was a problem with 4.0b beta that created problems for those who used the merge index command. As far as I know, that has been resolved, and I don't know of anyone who only used the release version of 4.0b that has problems with the rebuild index command. If you have, it's the first I've heard about it. Those who have had problems since the release version came out, were also testing the beta version.

You are right about the merge index command. It has been disabled.

I do know that you can hibernate the computer after pausing indexing, and it will restart the indexing after resuming. I've done it without errors on my low-end laptop, so I know it worked for at least one person. [;)]

To rebuild the index, either type the rebuild index command, or close L4, navigate to the index folder, and delete all the data there. Restarting L4 should initiate the rebuilding of the index. Theoretically the results of these two procedures should be the same.

Well, I'm officially confrused. I don't know which way to turn. I want the functionality of all my resources when I do a passage, exegetical or standard search!

Two things:

1. Just because you buy new resources, it doesn't mean that your index is out of date or needs to be rebuilt. Logos indexes those new resources in a separate index until such time as you rebuild (or formerly merge) your index. All your new resources are included in your searches (if there's anything there to search). If you're not finding this to be true, please report!

2. If you do want to rebuild your index, feel free to do so.

a. Try the easy way: type rebuild index in the command bar and let it work overnight. OR

b. Try the harder, and (ostensibly) more reliable way: Close L4. In Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Users\[Windows User Name]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\[Random Characters]\LibraryIndex and delete all the files there (or move them to a new location, if you're paranoid). If your update included Bibles then also delete all the files in C:\Users\[Windows User Name]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\[Random
Characters]\BibleIndex. NOTE: Path name will vary slightly depending on your version of Windows. ALSO NOTE: "AppData" ("Application Data" in XP - I think) is a hidden directory, you will have to enable view hidden files/folders in Windows to see this folder. Then restart L4 and let it index overnight.

If you pause indexing (by right clicking the icon in the Window's taskbar) it will resume in 4 hours or when you click on it again. I would do this before closing the laptop.
