Home page search box takes seconds to appear out of nowhere

Android Pixel XL. Chrome. Load the homepage. Scroll down and then back to the top. Or open a resource and switch back to home page. The go box that normally animates on desktop and on iPad Safari/Chrome doesn't animate. It just doesn't show up for 2-3 seconds and then appears all at once. On such small devices the animation doesn't matter but 2-3 seconds is almost enough time to make you think something is wrong and move on.
