As I mentioned in another thread, I am planning on upgrading my MacBook Pro to one of the new 2017 5k iMacs with 1tb fusion drive.I am reliably informed that the 1tb fusion drive in the new iMac has reduced the size of the ssd part of the drive, and I am a little worried how logos will run in it. Unfortunately, the 2tb fusion drive is out of my budget.

i thought it better to start a new thread, to ask my specific question:

I wonder if someone who is running Logos on the 1tb 2017 5k iMac could let me know if it runs well or not. I just couldn't put up with going back to how Logos was back before ssd drives, it would affect my workflow way too much.

I appreciate any advice.

Duncan, I had a 2012 iMac with the Fusion Drive. It had the 128 GB SSD married to the 1 TB HD. I can say that Logos ran fantastic on that machine.

Now, I know that I don't have the current 2017 5k iMac with the 1 TB Fusion Drive, but let me give you a piece of common wisdom found here on the forums: The SSD is the key component to consider for the best performance out of Logos. Don't skimp on that part. Find the $200 from somewhere to get the largest SSD portion you can for the Fusion Drive.

Also, an installation of Logos runs 20 or more GB (My 5000 resources is at 35 GB). The source you referred to (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_Drive) says that the 1 TB Fusion drive has a 32 GB SSD partition. And that's shared with everything else on your system. I don't see that working too well.

Maybe someone will say that Logos runs fine on the new iMac with a 1 TB Fusion drive, but it will very likely run better with the 2 TB Fusion with 128 GB SSD. This is a long-term investment you are making. If it were me, I would find the $200 from somewhere...I wouldn't skimp on the SSD part of your system.

I kinda thought the 32gb ssd portion of the 1tb fusion drive might be too small.

I'm actually wondering now whether I would be better stretching to a 512gb ssd, and using a decent speed of external, usb3 or thunderbolt, drive for storing video footage, media etc. That way all of logos could be on the ssd, along with all my important files. I'm assuming that would be even faster than the 2tb fusion drive. The other factor is that I currently dual boot windows using boot camp on the MacBook Pro , and I'm just reading that dual booting windows doesn't like fusion drives much.

On the MacBook Pro, I currently store video footage for editing on an external and editing works well. I guess I could always sell on trade in my MacBook to help fund a faster drive. Would be better than ending up with a slow Logos system.

I'd suggest you get an SSD straight away. I think a second drive is your best bet for more storage. No big deal in having an external.

It's really kind of a shame that Apple doesn't build around the dual drive scheme more common on PCs that use an SSD as drive one and a second HD that is 7200 RPM or better. But they don't and they have to live with that. We don't.

I run a PC with 2 drives , one SSD and the other conventional, It works great. You can pick SSDs up relatively cheaply now so if you can get a second drive in your system it would be worth it.

So, I'm still trying to work out which way to jump. Have managed to stretch budget a little by selling my old MacBook Pro and sharing my wife's air, to better spec the iMac.

If I went for the 2tb fusion drive, Will Logos definitely used the 128gb ssd part of the drive. As I understand it, the Mac OS governs that not the user. Will the fact that J use Logis often make the OS put it on the SSD?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to make the right decision.

That was my experience...at least Logos always felt fast. With the Fusion drive, the software blends the SSD and HD together so that the user cannot (easily) see where exactly the files are stored. You can, however, at times hear the HD spin up to access a file—then you know it's on the HD portion. Again, my experience with the Fusion Drive on a 2012 iMac was quite positive.

Going for a full SSD on an iMac can be kind of spendy, you could either:

1) As suggested above: Get an iMac with a smaller SSD and keep macOS and Logos on it and use an external drive for stuff like photo libraries and media files. Since the iMac is stationary, and the new connections are super-fast nowadays, this could be a good option. Plus, you could upgrade your external drive if needed or use it with the MacBook Air if you needed.

2) Check out the Apple refurbished store (https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/imac/27). You can get an older 5k iMac with a 1 TB SSD for $2459 (about $440 off). Still a decent machine that would run Logos just fine.

Thanks for your advice Levi, it's really helpful.

I did look at the refurbished Apple Store, but as I recently went back to university to train for ministry, the Apple education discounts on new iMacs are pretty good, and make the new models quite close in price to the refurbs.
