Logos 6 vs Free Logos 7

Wondering if there is any reason for me to upgrade to the free L7? Part of me (and I could be mistaken) suspects that more and more 'stuff' gets added every time that I am not going to use, and that I might have been better off sticking to L4. Are there any new improvements in terms of speed, or is it all about more 'stuff' that I'm happy to live without?

There are some neo Luddites who would disagree, but I believe you should always keep up with the free updates. If for no other reason than older versions are no longer supported.

No, I doubt it. In fact, you'll probably find that it's faster. Recently, Faithlife sped up the Logos startup. I've found that Faithlife keeps improving performance, and they are, in fact, being encouraged to continue to improve performance by many users.
Check out the "Performance" section of the last two releases:

I don't think so. There are always anecdotal stories both ways: "Great job FL, Logos runs faster than ever!!!" or "Can't you guys ever get it right! Why does it have to run so slow!!!" It is quite amusing when BOTH of those kinds of posts come out at the same time, for the same release.
I don't think there is anything from the current build itself which is going to massively slow you down. To the contrary, FL has announced that the next several releases will be performance centric ones.
In my experience, updating major releases (i.e. 6.x to 7.x) has always been a good thing. Troubles generally occur during a "point" (i.e. 6.1 to 6.2) release, in which case FL scrambles to create a fix. If you are someone who doesn't automatically update point releases, than you should use the same strategy you currently do, for the same reasons.
We have some users who talk about "Libronix" (L3 Windows) and how much better/faster it was. I can't speak to that, but L4, L5, L6, and L7 are really the same software as one another... it is an evolution of the same base code. Sometimes there are greater differences between point releases than "major" ones.

I'm a neo-Luddess. I love folks having fun dumping on others. And Heaven is just a sin away, too.
I routinely use L3 due to some features that walked. L5 was the speed demon. Truly impressive. If I'm not mistaken L7 messed up the text comparison tool, with scrolling. L6 was pre-messed up?
L7 continues the molassas tradition (for me), in how they're choosing what to buffer. But most users, I think, would see L7 as slightly better than L6 speed-wise.

Thank you everyone, much appreciated. I'm glad I asked. Also good to know that future versions will put performance issues first.

Start up for me might be a little faster i think I clocked 6 at 1:56 and 7 is 1:24 as for day to day usage in the app. I experienced some major passage guide bugs a few stable releases back that significantly slowed my over all usage but in general at this point I see no significant difference between 6 and 7 for the tasks i perform daily but I am not one who does complex analysis mostly just some searches and passage guide stuff for my studies.

Yes, but then I couldn't be a Luddess and that wouldn't be right.. I went thru Bible college with the Kindels (sp?). They seemed so ironic.

I've just spent about ten minutes trying to get the free version. I've had 'are you lost' and 'the cart is empty', I've had, 'upgrade to L7' which only tells you how to install after you've upgraded. Another link that then tells me I need Gold. This is like trying to find my way out of a maze.

Okay, finally found the right link.

Here's the link that sends you to 'your cart is empty' just so you know I am not completely useless at finding my way around websites:

The Homepage definitely loads much, much faster in 7 than in 4. The difference is more obvious the older/slower your computer is.

v7.8 beta is significantly faster at startup than the current v7.7 e.g. v7.7 takes 15s to get to the main window (blank) vs. 5s for v7.8 (and then it has to populate the layout). v7.8 will be available in early August.
