The recent performance improvements have been significant and I can only guess about the complexity of changes to the internal architecture, but the improvement in startup speed speaks for itself:
At least 3x faster loading the initial (blank) window** --> 5s vs. 15s for v7.7 on my 2 year old laptop.
And then it loads my layout faster.
Kudos.
