Transgender Resources

A little over two years ago, a Logos thread on transgender resources was started at URL https://community.logos.com/forums/t/104343.aspx?PageIndex=1

Several of the posts that followed pertained to homosexuality, bisexuality, and marriage, but not so much to the specific topic of transgenderism requested by the OP.

I realize that in the past, transgender related issues/discussions were not nearly as prevalent as those addressing homosexuality and bisexuality, but transgenderism has come much more to the forefront of sexuality issues over the last couple of years and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend good current resources specifically on transgenderism.

I'm interested in pretty much any/all types of resources--from pastoral and ministry perspectives to medical/scientific journals/discussions--as long as they pertain to the specific topic of transgenderism. I would prefer digital media whether textual, audio, or video, but paper is fine if it's a good resource and not available in digital format.

I have just started reading God Loves Diversity and Justice but it so far has only touched on it, an interesting multi faith approach but has been good so far. Retreating Forward: A Spiritual Practice with TransgenderPersons by David Weekley looks very promising on the subject but I have yet to read it... But it seems to have much useful information for interactions and how to best offer ministering to those who are Transgendered. For us who are label CIS gendered (don't remember the meaning of hand other than we identify and feel comfortable with the gender matching our DNA. Although one strange thing is the have been a significant number of boys raised as girls due to ambiguity at birth... Not trying to discuss things or argue one way or another, I know this could be a big ole can of worms.

PS: I ended up grabbing both those because they looked very interesting and sometimes in the past books that are less than too some peoples theological viewpoint have been forced out, I am one who is more if it offends me greatly I won't buy it but won't ask for it to be banned. But then I am the type of person who owns a copy of Mein Kampf digitally but didn't buy it just downloaded a pdf copy for reference. Of course downloaded a free copy of NWT version of the Bible for reference too although really rarely have opened ether of these two items.

Hi, John! In my original post I mentioned another transgender related thread in the Logos forums that is a couple of years old. I haven't checked out all the links yet from that thread, but so far there are two that lead to resources I've found very helpful.

The second is to five videos on Vimeo from a conference put on by Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. The URL is: https://vimeo.com/channels/ggbtsmarriage .

The videos from the conference are not specifically about transgenderism, but do include it.

Thanks for contributing Dan. Your posts are always helpful. I found (but haven't yet purchased) either of the resources you mentioned. I was caught off-guard by the price of the first one "God Loves Diversity and Justice", so decided to check out other resources first. And I simply couldn't find any info at all on the author of the second one "Retreating Forward: A Spiritual Practice with TransgenderPersons", nor any reviews of the book, so I temporarily put that one aside as well while checking out some of the other links from the older thread I mentioned in my original post. I'd be very interested in what you think of these two resources if/when you have time to actually check them out.

Yep! It is far easier to not look into a situation and retreat into throwing scripture quotes around like hand grenades. Compassion is something that Christ had because of who he was. None of us were born perfect (as Adam & Eve were created) so it behoves us all to attempt to learn about the situations so the Holy Spirit can work with us more effectively and enable us to aim to treat all of our fellow humans with Christlike compassion and wisdom. Hence my interest.

MJ, so far I've only had time to check out the first link, but even if that was the only link you provided, I'd be saying "Thank you!" The document from that link is very thoughtfully and respectfully done. I found it very helpful.

Thank you, J. I'll check out Ryan's bio and stay tuned for his upcoming book. But I'm currently confronted with an immediate and unexpected situation that I have to work through, so I'll also see if he has anything else that's already on the market.
