Issue with Church Fathers resource on iOS

I've encountered a strange issue when reading the Ante-Nicene Fathers (vol 1) on iOS (iPhone 6s with iOS 10.3.3 and the most recent Verbum app).  I get an opaque box over the text when reading in my preferred format (white text on black background. When I switch my preferences to black on white, the text is visible but displays in strangely aligned columns. I have adjusted the column settings but it doesn't make a difference. As far as I can tell, this is only happening with this one particular book. Please see the attached images.

I believe this is a resource specific bug/limitation. The book isn't regular text... it may be a picture or at least a table. I don't think There is a fix at present.

I just checked a similar resource with the same result. It appears to be in a text box. The sepia version works, so I don't know why the black version couldn't work too.
