Logos 4 Frustrations

Two frustrations in using Logos 4 (as opposed to Logos 3) -

(1) I am trying to install the Theological Journal Library, Volume 12. It has installed fine in Logos 3. But, I have spent over twenty-four hours trying to find "command line" directives to find those resources. The resources are very clearly located in my resource folder but won't show up in Logos 4. Since upgrading to Logos 4, I have received multiple resources that are still sold in Logos 3 format which require jumping through these hoops. I still don't have the journals working in Logos 4, but am resigning myself to the fact that they won't work.

(2) I am disappointed at the loss of control over the use of Greek and Hebrew fonts as I previously had in Logos 3. I have been scanning the forums to find a way to continue to utilize graphical queries or other advanced search processes in Logos 4. But, I have found nothing. This, in my opinion, cheapens the value of the software. The transliteration function is interesting, but where can I do my more advanced Greek searches based on more complex word forms/roots/stems, etc...?

Since Dom answered your first Q, I'll answer just the second: you can download the Greek and Hebrew keyboards from Logos and use them if you don't like typing in transliterated characters.

Without knowing more information, have you tried either/both of these two ideas -- I am assuming you have Logos 3 and Logos 4 installed on the same computer for the second idea...

1. In Logos 3, where TJL 12 is successfully installed, do a Synchronize Licenses, then go to Logos 4, exit the program if it's running, start it again, and from the command box type "Update Resources". You will see a small message int he top right corner, then after a minute or 2 you will see from the Windows task bar that Logos is downloading resources.

2. If that fails, start Logos 4, and from the command box type Scan C:\Program Files\Libronix DLS\Resources, or whatever the EXACT folder is, full pathname, of your Logos 3 Resource folder. After you have typed that in and it enter, EXIT Logos 4, and restart it, Upon restart you will see it display a message (I think it is "Preparing your library", but I don't remember exactly). Once the home page comes up, Click on your library icon and see if TJL resources are there. Note you need to look for a specific journal by year to validate this, as there is not a way to see that TJL 12 has been added, for example.

Yes, I have Logos 3 and Logos 4 both installed on the same machine.

I have synchronized licenses (have gone through the synchronization process at least four times, now, in the last twenty-four hours) in Logos 3. Resources appear within Logos 3 - open - and are searchable.

In Logos 4, I have used the "update resources" command. (Did this yesterday - downloaded about 50MB.) I allowed my machine to re-index (used about another 7 hours). This afternoon I used the command "Scan C:\Program Files (x86)\Libronix DLS\Resources" (copied directly out of resource location information in Logos 3). Closed and reopened Logos 4. Logos displays the message you mentioned "Preparing your library."

I have searched on specific journals. None from this release are showing up.

Wait until the indexing is fully completed. Many resources won't show up until then..

Indexing finished this morning (it's afternoon, here, in Central Africa). Should I delete the indexing folder contents and re-index?

Why? If the indexer completed successfully it is pointless to reindex.

Are the journals not in your library? Can you read them?

If you have an Indexer log I'd like to see it - see http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging & upload the logs.

Since someone answered the question about how to type in Greek & Hebrew already, I though I'd comment on the significant benefit of Logos current approach and also on the graphical query issue.

By making the Greek & Hebrew keyboards OS level keyboards, rather than program internal, its significantly easier to move from typing in Greek in L4 to typing Greek in MSWord or OpenOffice. To use the languages only in the software cheapens one's knowledge of them. Logos' keyboards are good, but personally, I would suggest that people use the Greek national polytonic keyboards already in your OS. That is to say, if you're going to do Greek, why not do Greek the Greek way!

As for the graphical query, yes, that has been an issue for many of us. A large portion of the graphical query stuff can be simulated in the morph search (particularly using the search terms BEFORE and AFTER [http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP]), though some uber-complex searches aren't possible currently. At one point there was no plans on bring it back, but at SBL/ETS in November, a user apparently convinced Bob that there was a need (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/3389/42013.aspx#42013). Does anyone know where that threat on the forum is? But what that implementation will look like or even when it will come is completely unknown to me -- its not on the missing features page. Considering how much more amazing verse lists in L4c (Beta) are compared to the old verse lists in L3, I think we can be confident that whatever they do will be significantly superior and significantly easier to use.

I recently (a month ago) purchased all Galaxies' Journals. I installed them into L3 and synchronized licenses. It took a while and a couple of restarts, but they all now appear in L4, in all 4 installations (2 Windows, 2 Mac). I just checked, and BibSac 2008 is present (that is in Volume 12).

I know this probably does not help solve your problem, but in your original post, you said that you had resigned yourself to this not working. If you still do not have Volume 12, perhaps you should contact Customer Service tomorrow.

Jack, I expect these are the same files you have in L3 as Logos have pulled their copies off the server. Can you confirm they all have lower case id's ie. gs_bsac_ as opposed to GS_BSAC_?

They are uppercase, so they must have come from the L3 Resources folder.

EDIT: When I looked for the files in the L3 folder, I remembered that I first loaded the CDs into Logos Mac 1.2.2 and synchronized licenses from there. Resource Paths in L3 Win was set to that folder. I suppose L4 pulled them from there.

That's interesting. I thought the resources form Galaxie had a lower case id. Where did you purchase your collection?

I purchased them from Galaxie. Hampton gave me a good price since I had already purchased Volumes 1–10 for Accordance. The files in the L1.2.2 (Mac) are uppercase. That should be the one I loaded from the CD. I checked and the files on the CD are uppercase.
