Disable splash screen when linking to Logos from PowerPoint

I have hyperlinked all the Bible and other resource references in my PowerPoint presentations to show the passage in Logos. It is great! My students love it! It is a much better educational experience.

However, the accreditors are coming! They will not like it when they seen the almost "subliminal" Logos splash screen show 40+ times in a class session. They will say I am marketing a commercial product! The "Logos Bible Software" at the top of the screen will not be a problem since it does not draw attention to itself. The splash screen is a problem.

How can I disable the splash screen?

But can't you start Logos up ahead of time before starting the PowerPoint presentation and before anyone is watching, and then not close it after each time you click over to it from within the presentation (just Alt+Tab back to PowerPoint and continue with the next slide)? The spash screen only comes up when Logos is launching.

Yes, the Alt+Tab does not display the splash, but hyperlinking does. When doing a PowerPoint presentation in front of a group hyperlinking is the only way to go.

I am with you on this matter.

I am more than happy if the software does a splash on startup (once), as you can do it when noone is looking, if thats important. And few would have much issue with a program ident on first run.

However, Logos4 does it EVERY TIME it starts up.

I was attempting to write a small proof-of-concept for a user than asked here about needing an object module for Logos4, for use with his touchpad PC. He wanted a simple low-key interface to direct the screen to bible verses from some nice large buttons. See http://community.logos.com/forums/t/14621.aspx

I wrote a simple Visual Basic tool to start a new process, and pass it the link to a resource, such as libronixdls:jump|ref=bible.5.8.6|res=LLS:1.0.10

(Without an object model, I dont know of any other simple way to "drive" Logos4 from external, short of feeding it keypresses, and hoping it does the right thing. I have yet to explore directing keypresses into the command bar, from an external program. I expect that a careful use of [Control D][short delay][command][ENTER] might work if someone cares to try before I get back to it)

Well, my result was that a NEW process started every time, with a new process id, displayed a Logos splash screen, passed the link into the already running copy of Logos4, and then exited, killing that new process, and leaving the original.

After each link, then was always only one copy of Logos4, the same original one, but the new process that took the link always displayed the splash screen first.

Bottom line, I did not consider that would make an acceptable solution, so for now, have given up on developing anything more.

If the splash screen could be disabled, I would consider atempting to write a simple front end, that could link verses in a simple way, and that might then be useful to users of Logos4.

All my program would do, if I wrote it, would be to direct the main Logos4 application to bible verses, but just as for the Power Point question, the splash screen kills the idea.

Please Logos, let us turn the screen off if we wish. We already use the product, maybe we even love it at times, so let us get on with using it more please, without the splash screen.

OPS - Its not Control-D, but ALT-D, that directs input to the "Command Box".

Anyway, I think I'm going to explore this idea from Visual Basic, so an external program can drive Logos4 a little.

However, I still would like:

1) An option to disable the splash screen (easy change to just add /NoSplash to commandline processing would be a great help for now)

2) An Object Model for programming (massive task I think)

I'm interested in seeing if I can write something simple to take your links from PowerPoint, and feed keypresses into Logos4.

It would be helpful to me, if you could please email me a simple powerpoint with a few links to Logos in it. It could be a short one that you use for real, or just 1 or 2 pages, with a few sample links. I want to be sure I'm trying the same thing you actually use, rather than something else.

Of course, if Logos added (or already has) a setting to disable the splash screen, this will be unneeded.

Anyway, a secondary email account for me, that I'm happy to risk here in public, is user "astro" which you can send me the sample file to me at my isp of "xtra.co.nz" so I am sure you can work that out.

OK - It Works!!!

I've written a tiny .Net Forms program for Windows, that takes whatever you send it on the command line, and types it into the Logos4 Command Box.

If I redirect the Shell Open command for Logos4, to my program, per [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\libronixdls\shell\open\command], then my program grabs the command instead, and sends it to the command box as key presses.

From PowerPoint, it works without needing to update the PowerPoint content or hyperlinks, and no Splash Screen.

However, there is a minor interaction seen with the command box, but no branding.

I would still rather have:
1) Logos to allow us to disable the slash screen
2) An Object Model into Logos4 as there is for L3

However, if this is interesting to anyone, and we dont get (1) really soon, please email me if you are interested.

If it turns out to be useful, one of the folk here may be able to host it on one of their web sites.

1) In L4, click on the window icon of the resource that you want to link to

2) In the drop down menu select Url. (this is a one time action, it tells L4 that you want links in the URL format)

3) Notice the keyboard command for creating a link, we will be using it later.

4) Now in PowerPoint, enter the text that you want to show for your hyperlink

5) Back in L4, position the resource to the location that you want your hyperlink to take you (e.g. the right resource and location, the location in the reference box is the precise location for the hyperlink)

6) Now on the keyboard press the key combination Ctrl + ALT + C. (L4 will create the hyperlink address in your clipboard)

7) In PowerPoint, select the text you typed. (click at beginning of your text and drag the mouse with the left button down)

8) Hold the mouse over the highlighted text and right click (a pop-up menu will appear)

9) In the pop-up menu click on hyperlink.

10) When the dialog box appears (as shown below), click in the address box. Then on your keyboard press the key combination Ctrl + V. (this is windows standard Paste command).

11) Now press the OK button. (your hyperlink is built now)

12) In the edit mode of PowerPoint, you can hold your mouse over the new hyperlink and right click. A pop-up menu will appear.

13) Select Open hyperlink. This will open L4 to your resource and it specific location.

If you run your PowerPoint slide, then when you see your hyperlink you can just click on it and it will open L4 to your location.

I run a hyper-interactive classroom.

I need to make a movie of how I build as use this combination Power Point/Logos stuff. Just a few notes while I learn to run the silly movie tool.

The old way that is not as interactive

Make a regular Power Point presentation
Copy and paste stuff from Logos into that Power Point
Send Logos graphics directly to Power Point
Share it with (show it to) your learners

He is new way.

As you build a Power Point (update an old one) make all the Bible references hyperlinks (see the wiki on hyperlinking)
You can do the same for sections from commentaries, theology books, graphics, etc. that you might want to reference in class (or your sermon?).
In class (church) show the Power Point and click on the hyperlinks.
As you interact with the learner and content explore other things in Logos.

One of the things I do is from the interlinear section under my Bible passage, run a word study on a keyword in the passage. One can use the parallel resources to find other articles on the subject.

Basically what I am doing is showing them how to study and learn. I am teaching them how to fish for themselves, not just merely giving them a fish.
