L4 Indexer cause CPU to overheat

After I installed L4, I noticed that my computer kept shutting down after about 1 minute of booting up. The only extra thing running from what I could tell was the L4 indexer. So I rebooted it and killed the task as soon as I could and the computer seemed to run fine.

To finalize my testing, I ran CPUZ to check the CPU temp. Without the L4 indexer, the CPU ran at normal temperature. I fired up L4. As soon as the indexer got to work, the CPU soared up to close to 87c. That is out of control! I uninstalled L4 and will try on a different computer. Perhaps a virtual machine or something. Anyway, gotta fix this folks. Thanks

Use a household fan to cool it while indexing. It's the only time the CPU gets stressed and it works for my laptop!

The other strategy is to index less often so go to Program Settings and set Automatically Download Updates to NO! You get notification of a download but you can refuse it until you are ready. So queue up your purchases and perform indexing once!

That's not something Logos can fix. If your computer is overheating when the processor is operating at 100% for sustained periods, then you need to replace your processor fan. In other words, I'm afraid that it is your computer, not Logos.

I had the same problem. I had to move the index from my desktop to my laptop. Something needs to be done. I didn't have this problem originally when I installed Logos on my laptop.

I am confused as to why you are having this problem. My MBP did not even get overly warm to the touch when indexing either L-4 Mac Alpha or the Windows Beta under Parallels.

Having similar issue with Dell Studio laptop. Indexing is running the process at near 100% and heat jumps to 150-160F. When it gets much higher is shuts it down. Then I have to try indexing again. I don't remember this happening with initial indexing. Can Logos put a limit on how much CPU the indexer uses?

OK, this needs to be stated again. This is NOT a software problem, it is NOT a Logos 4 problem, and it is NOT an indexer problem. A software program can not "cause" a processor to overheat. If indexing is "causing" that, then so would any other program that causes your processor to run at 100% for a sustained period of time (granted there aren't a whole lot of programs out there that do that, which is probably why you aren't running into this anywhere else and therefore assuming that it is a Logos problem). This is not a "Logos problem", this is a computer problem. There is NOTHING that Logos could "fix" that would resolve this, short of throttling the processor to use a maximum of say 70% of the available processing power. That would be an extremely silly workaround that would punish the performance of those whose computers are operating just fine in order to "fix" a computer problem that is in no way a fault of Logos 4.

EDIT - If any of you want to test this theory, you can download a copy of Chessbase Light from www.chessbase.com, install it and then turn on infinite analysis. This is the first program I can think of that should quickly and easily peg your processor at 100% and keep it there...though I don't remember if the light version is multi-threaded or not. But anyway, might be a quick and easy test IF it is multi-threaded.

Google "cpu stress test" and see all the tools that run and really ramp up all the parts of your computer, to see what will fail under stress! I use these tools all the time. A system should be able to go for a very long time and not have CPU, memory, or system board problems. The reason these stress tools exist is because marginal components or improperly designed systems will fail when under heavy load. That's a hardware issue not a software issue.

It's very important to see if the CPU is being overclocked. If it is, the fan, heat sink, etc. must also be considered from a design perspective. If you saw the formula for power consumption, it would be clear that a 20% overclock for example would result in a 20% increase in power consumption, which surely affects the heat in a computer system not designed for that.

As for remedies, there are some config things that could be causing this:

1. The CPU fan is not working efficiently, usually it should spin at 3000 rpm at full loads.

2. The heat sink material was not properly installed during the processor installation.

3. BIOS settings might be limiting the CPU fan to work at full potential due to acoustic settings.

Another thing that can cause heat build-up is DUST! You should try removing any dust from your computer (assuming that you haven't done this already). You will be surprised with the amount of dust you will find there. Open it up and just "blow" - you will be shocked! (This obviously isn't an issue for a new computer/laptop - YET)

You should also check specifically what CPU you have, and see what it is rated at. The temperatures stated in this thread in and of themselves are not too hot, depending on the CPU! The reason to check this, is if the CPU is rated to run fine at the temperature your laptop is shutting down at, then you know you have another problem (fan, dust, heat sink broken, etc.). Definitely, I completely forgot to mention that. The large majority of overheating problems I've dealt with in clients' PCs have been caused by a build-up of dust on/in the fins of the heatsink. Get a can of compressed air for ~$10 at any office supply store, open up your computer (please make sure you turn it off and unplug it first), and blow any dust from the fans and heatsinks. Laptops are a bit more complicated and shouldn't be disassembled unless you know for sure what you are doing, but they can suffer from the same problem. Dust is a huge insulator of heat and can really build up thickly on the heatsink. This can account for a full 10-20 degree difference or more in the load temperature of the processor.

No offense, but in my 16 years of business of working full-time with hardware, I have NEVER seen a fan damaged by compressed air. The only instance I can think of where that would be a risk would be in the case of a very small and/or flimsy fan. Most desktop CPU fans these days are of the 80mm or larger variety...I think the smallest ones (at least in desktops) are 60mm. Any of these can easily withstand compressed air (canned compressed air, not compressed air from a compressor). Laptops are another story, but I noted above that nobody should be disassembling a laptop unless they know what they are doing.

I can tell you that when it comes to computers there is little I have not or will not do if I thin it will help, as I know I can replace/fix/deal with any problem that results. And it has at times [:^)]

That said, AND DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!, I am a real stickler for dust in computers, so once a year, you know what I do? DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME - I take my 200 MPH LEAF BLOWER, and use it to blow the dust out of each of my computers! I can tell you the first time I did it, I thought components would be flying everywhere. But I have done this for about 10-15 years, and I have never (knock knock) had a problem! Oh - can you imagine how clean the inside of my computers are?

I had a similar problem and ended up getting a new notebook to run Logos on. The only way that I could get Logos to index on the old system was to disable one of the dual processors so that it ran as a uni this stopped it from over heating. Once I was fully up and running on the new system I had a friend look at the PC and he found that one of the wires for the processor fan was under the processor whilst the system was fine for the 2.5 years that I used it before the Logos 4 beta arrived the indexing process exposed the flaw. Basically the covering of the wire melted causing a short and preventing the fan from functioning correctly.

Bottom line was that the Logos 4 index process highlighted a hardware problem in my old notebook that has now been fixed the winner being my son who now has my original notebook.

I have no idea if this was addressed but yes a program can cause overheating by stressing the CPU to high levels. Ive tested it with a monitor and watched the cpu heat go up and down depending on whether or not its indexing
