Double Documents???

I've noticed that recently (I think about the time I imported all my notes from L3) my opening and changing of layouts has become very, very slow. (One layout of 6 books takes over a minute and another layout of two books takes 30 seconds). I thought maybe something got corrupted and figured I'd just delete the layout files and recreate them and see if that might fix the problem.

That's when I noticed something strange.

I'm using a PC and Windows XP so when I went to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Logos4 and double clicked on "Documents" (that's where the layouts are kept) I saw not one folder (as had been in the past) but two.

I'm not sure when or why this happened. The original of the two (the 5mz....) is 14.1 megabytes while the second one is only 401 kilobytes.

I guess my questions would be:

1. Does anyone know why/how I got 2 document folders?

2. Could this be the source of my suddenly slow layout opening (over 1 minute) or could it be because of something else?

3. If it is because of something else, are there any ideas on how to make it return to the speed it used to be?

Did you, by chance, change your user name sometime after your initial install of L4, or do a complete uninstall/reinstall of the software. That would account for it. So would purchasing resources on the same computer/desktop with different user id's.

I don't know if this would account for your slow layout openings. But between note files and markups imported from L3, I have noticed a slow down in start-up as well. I suspect the markups as much as the note files.

It seems the more markups and note files you have start up with a large number of marked up and/or annoted resources, the slower the startup seems to be. At least that seems to be my experience.

Even so, it's still faster than L3 started up with the same note files and markups.

Hi Richard,

I think you may be right with the the note files AND markups causing it. I have a ton of both of them and that is probably the main culprit. As for your question, I haven't changed user names nor uninstalled/reinstalled nor purchased resources with a different ID. Weird huh? I'm wondering if I should/could just delete the second folder but I don't want to mess anything up.

Check if you are also doubled-up in the Logos4\Data folder. If one only that should be the correct Id. for \Documents as well (and it should be the smaller folder). If two then report the size and structure of the smaller folder.

Okay I just checked the data folder and it only has the one (5mz.....). I was feeling particularly bold last night and I just went ahead and deleted the second folder and so far haven't had any ill affects (though I did have to merge indexes).

I don't believe merging indexes is supported right now because of problems with the merge command. Did you mean rebuild the indexes?

So I went to the command bar and typed in "Merge Index" (which was weird because I just rebuilt my index from scratch by deleting all the files last week). But anywho I typed in the merge index command and it said "merging indexes" and 2 hours later it was done. Since then I haven't had the bubble pop up so I assumed something fixed it somehow.

If you are using 4.0b this could cause problems. I say 'could' because as far as I know these problems occurred in the beta period of 4.0b. I had thought that the merge index command was disabled.

Anyway, if you begin to run into problems with the program, or start getting spurious or absent search results, please run the rebuild index command instead. Rebuilding takes longer than merging, but as I noted, there was a problem with merging indexes in 4.0b beta.

I had thought that I had the latest version (it's set to do automatic updates) and I assumed that Logos wouldn't send out beta versions as automatic updates but I could be wrong. The version that I have is 4.0b SR-1 (4.02.3.7704).

Would this be the beta version with the problems you mentioned?

No. SR stands for Service Release. It is the official public release of the software, and is, as far as I know, the current release (I'm on 4.0c beta 2).

I'm probably mistaken about the merge index command being disabled. I've been wrong before. It was probably part way through the 4.0b beta process that merge index was disabled, and then re-enabled later.

That said, if you do run into problems, suspect the index and do a full rebuild index from the command box.

"Merge" is not disabled but it performs a full rebuild.
