The Free Book of the Month for October 2017 is Joseph Fitzmyer's Anchor Yale Commentary on Romans:
www.logos.com/free-book-of-the-month
The +1 and +2 are from the same series, and are Habakkuk and Galatians respectively.
Thanks FaithLife!
Good grief. This makes me happy!
I guess.. I can still rejoice on other things. [U]

Hehe - I also had the free book last month for NIVAC.
This month, they've got the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary going at an insane price (50% off). Might want to check that out (if you don't already have that on your shelf [:P])
Excellent. I needed 2 of 3. Slowly acquiring the Yale Bible Commentary series with sales, coupons, etc. I'm now up to 26 volumes after many years.
All three were new to me - in Logos at least. Have the Romans and Galatians in print, and in a previous Anchor sale, the Romans volume was one of the last cuts I made to stay in budget.
The Verbum free book is up as well. Actually I had that one already, but the additional highly reduced price volume was new to me. If you are interested in the Fathers at all, those two volumes of Augustine are certainly worth it.

Thanks Gordon - I am very pleased with the offering this month and grabbed all 3. I've had Fitzmyer's Romans recommended to me, and it has been on my wish list for awhile [Y]
Thanks for this, FL!
3 excellent volumes this month for less that $5. Thank you!
Sweet!
Thank you!
Wow, this is a great deal, thanks FL
Yes, thank you Faithlife !
Super Thanks, FL, for a Super Deal!
DAL
Awesome deal
Thank you, FL. This is quite a gift! Much appreciated.
Wish they had done this at any point in the previous 20 years. [8-)] I'm thinking in particular about all those years they were giving away public domain freebies that were already part of Portfolio. Never understood why the best customers who spent the most money were being shown so little love. After years of doing without, I picked up AYB last year.
Have you spent tens of thousands? NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!!
Glad for those who are able to take advantage.
I get that getting 3 commentaries for $5 is a GREAT deal, but these particular commentaries are rated low on www.bestcommentaries.com, probably due to their liberal leaning tendencies, but that is just a guess on my part.
I am disappointed that this being the 500th anniversary of Luther's 95 theses, that there are not any Reformational resources on sale this month. We will all be dead and gone when the next anniversary comes around. This was a BIG event in church history- no matter where you stand on the issues that were debated.
Has FL said there won't be a sale on reformational resources? Just because the FBOM, publisher spotlight and October sales resources are not specific to the reformation does not mean there won't be a separate sales event sometime this month. Well just have to wait and see.
True, but as big of an event as this is, it would have made logical sense to have the FBOM, Publisher Spotlight and October sales be about it.
I shall wait and see.

I would not take bestcommentaries.com as the final word on the value of commentaries. Certain series are of different value to different user types. Some academic treatments are nearly useless for ministry and sometimes overall (too speculative, excessively wrapped up with one main method, eg, source criticism in the OT). But for academics, date and author often make it a must to interact with these. And no matter what, getting them means benefiting from dynamic pricing on other collections in which these volumes are included if and when someone wants to get those one day.
I have suggested before offering a choice, although I can see how, no matter how many choices are given (which would have to be within reason), there would some who have them all already. Then there would others who change their minds and keep calling customer service to exchange for another title. So I am not sure what a better alternative would be to the current system. Perhaps a coupon code? Like "Already own this product? Use coupon code "FBOM" to obtain a X discount on a different resource". But again, the value of what is offered varies and I am sure must be affected by promotional agreements with publishers. So users would go "Anchor on Romans normally costs over $50, how come I only get a $20 off coupon code?". I just can't see any solution without its difficulties.
Even though I also find it frustrating when it happens to me, I cannot help but think that there is something in the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16) that should temper our frustration.

I agree with this, but would caution against downplaying bestcommentaries (not that you are), as the reviewers are respectable and across all fields- from pastoral to academic.

My experience with the BestCommentaries is that it primarily shows popularity with evangelical pastors. It is primarily the work of busy pastors who often don't have the time to look at all the offerings out there. And most of us don't really have that time either. Often some cream does tend to rise to the top, but often the net is not cast as far as I would like in looking at the options.
But if you see the links provided, you see 4 star reviews by Denver Seminary for the two NT volumes. Looking in more detail I see that these commentaries are not their first choice on Romans or Galatians - but are obviously viewed as solid choices. And in the Habakkuk volume, it links that it got a 5 star review by John Glynn's survey. These are by "experts" who do attempt to look wider at the choices out there. And at least these experts, who are not generally viewed as crazy liberals, seem to think that all three of these offerings have some significant value.
Probably none of them would be my primary commentary if I were preparing a Bible Study on a book - they simply would lead me down many rabbit holes which would not be useful to me at this time. But from using the Romans and Galatians volumes a bit in the past, I have found them to offer fair and interesting perspectives on things when I have wanted to dig deeper. I am not sure we can reasonably hope for much more than that for these special sales.

I agree.
Im not sure if I misunderstood you, but in case I didnt, the reviewers on bestcommentaries include:

I don't really have a problem with FL offering things I already have. I have a problem with them offering things EVERYBODY WITH HIGH END PACKAGES WILL ALREADY HAVE. If I pick up some random non-base package resource and a year later it's free, that really doesn't bother me. Stuff happens. But their consistent offering of things that are only in Diamond and Portfolio packages (which has happened dozens of times) makes me feel disrespected. Perhaps my thinking is off, but having spent really big money on Logos only to be repeatedly left out of the "appreciation" offers precisely because I've spent so much money w/ Logos strikes me as bizarrely inverse of appropriate. Maybe the thinking is, "peeps w/ top packages are rolling in cash, so it won't bother them." But I'm not rolling in cash. I'm well below the single person poverty line, and FL gets between 25-50% of my monthly income. A free book means I can direct my $10-40 elsewhere and still get double value. Value is EVERYTHING to me regarding my Logos purchases, which is why I stretch myself to get the top packages (like Collector's Edition) to take advantage of maximum savings. My point is basically this: there are thousands of things I would like to get in Logos at this time, and the reason I don't already have them is because they aren't part of any large base or topic package. Why can't some of those things be offered? I do recognize that part of the motivation for offering 2-3 volumes of a larger series is to encourage purchase of the complete series down the road. Fine...but there are tons of available series not in Portfolio or Collector's. Why must the freebies so often come from those packages?

Presumably because publishers who don't agree to have their books sold for next to nothing in base packages are even less likely to agree to give them away for free.

Low and behold...the next day we got Reformation Resources on sale!! Yippie!

Great!
One more hearty thank you for Fitzmyer on Romans in The Anchor Yale Bible. By the way, considering the role played by Romans in the Reformation, a commentary on Romans by a Roman Catholic does seem to be a suitable Faithlife gift this 500th Anniversary[:D]

And considering that Luther was an Augustinian monk, St. Augustine on Faith and Works seems like a suitable choice for Verbum. [:D]

I seem to recall that they've had Reformation Day sales in the past, so there might well be something again at the end of the month.
Edit: I just noticed that they are offering a 500th Anniversary Sale. Details here: https://www.logos.com/reformation
