IPAD
I purchased the IPAD standard, not the 3G version. I downloaded Logs for IPAD and downloaded a significant amount of my library. The only time can search my libary is when the IPAD is wifi connected. is there another method to search my downloaded library when I'm not wifi connected?

No, search is done entirely on the server.

The HP Atom-based tablet PC seems to be the answer the iPad cannot supply. It comes out in May.
I DO like Apple products! But the iPad after its hype is mediocre and to me appears to be little better than an iPhone with Logos.

That seems like a bit of an overstatement. And considering that the OP actually purchased the iPad and now is looking to see how to use Logos on it, perhaps this is not the appropriate time for your response. I reminded of a verse having to do with speaking truth in love.
Wesley, all of the processing is done by a server so it requires an internet connection. This is a great thing - when we have internet - since it greatly speeds up the searches, so that it takes seconds instead of minutes on underpowered tablets. But it means that without internet the iPad is mostly an ebook reader.

Even the HP tablet won't be able to search off line. Nice plug but maybe you should have read the question.

If the tablet has the full version of Logos 4 (like my current Netbook) what would prevent an offline search?

I have no reason to "plug" anything. The HP can have the full install as any laptop can so offline searching is fine.
The question would be the opposite if we were discussing any tablet item other than iPad.
I don't see that my response was harsh. Sure wasn't meant to be. But an iPad should be able to do more than an iPhone and it appears with Logos it cannot. For a tablet device, being shocked and responding the way I did that it is just a large-screen and expensive iPad is not inappropriate.

If the HP feels in the hand like the iPad and runs all Windows Apps with a very nice finger based pointing (touch) then I will want one will sell my laptop to get it.
I just doubt that Windows will be as snappy and useful on a device with the specs HP lists. We'll see. My son has an Acer netbook and I would not want to run Logos desktop app on it. I am too impatient.
The iPad feels much faster and much of what I want to do with my Logos resources is available on the iPad. We need a little more with languages study.

Better to be a slightly upgraded IPhone then a slightly downgraded PC.

It would be wonderful to have a full installation of L4 on a slate sized device, but I'm skeptical. How well do the touch screen features function on a program not designed for it?

I just downloaded the iPad Logos and find it to be quick, easy to use, and worth every (free) penny! :-)

Really? Have you tried to run Logos 4 on a Netbook, and tried to use the Logos 4 UI for the PC with your finger? Imagine that dinky little interface manipulated with human hands. I cringe.
All I know is that I love reading my Logos library on my iPad, and have not touched my laptop in a week since having it.
And besides -- an iPad with a 3G connection can search anywhere there's a 3G connection. Similarly, an iPad with a Wifi connection can search. This limitation is one built into the Logos iPad app, not the device itself.
Apple has already sold half a million iPads, I'd be curious to see how many Slates HP sells in a year.

I already have the 3G iPhone, but am going to upgrade this summer. I have a Toshiba laptop, which is still in good shape. Finally, I have a Kindle, which I thoroughly enjoy.
BUT because of my Logos investment, I would consider the iPad. When it comes to my laptop, that is where all my L4 is; I do not even use it on my desktop, which has more power than my laptop.
So one question becomes whether the iPad, once it receives the upgrades like the iPhone and can do multitasking (in the Fall), will be able to handle the whole Logos open windows thing, or if it will be impaired in some way (slow down, can't open too many windows, etc). I think I could buy more laptop with more memory and storage, but that touch screen is worth quite a bit!
I am inclined to upgrade my iPhone this summer and then buy an iPad this Fall or nearer to Christmas (can anyone say, "Christimas deals"?)

My only frustration with my Ipad and L4, is that I like to take notes when I read, and I can't do that. Since indexing would need to be done on the ipad to institute searching, I can see that it would cause some problems.

For those who are using the iPad, since I am considering purchasing one for L4 primarily, I was wondering if it had the "parallel resources" feature so if I look up a topic I can cycle through my resources that also have a reference to the given topic/passage?
Also, how do you all feel about doing most of your reading and research on the iPad instead of laptop?
I agree taking notes would be really helpful. If we can get as close to the laptop experience as possible on the iPad that would be fantastic.

It's possible, but not available in the current version of the Logos iPad app. The iPad does not natively send a signal to the VGA adapter just because it's plugged in. The app has to be written in a way that makes this possible.

I seriously doubt we'll see a new iPad at Christmas. Apple rarely updates a product more than once a year. I expect we'll see new iPads in Spring of 2011.

I found the new updated Ipad2 in a bar the other night and sold it to gizmotron for 5000.00 It has 4 cameras, optional cruise control, and it's totally titanium leather. I hear it's going to be out in December.

I think the whole mindset with the iPad (and iPhone) is different than the pc or mac mindset - that is to say, I don't think an iPad is made to run a full fledged very very robust program like L4 - in it's present configuration (give it a couple of updates - then I will probably change my mind).
The ipad is great, my wife and I have had to decide who gets it in the divorce since we fight over it all the time (I am just kidding, no divorce, and she gets it), but it is not a laptop, it is not a desktop, it is (for me), a library / dayplanner / internet browser / bible / note taker / emailer / and lots more.
But the real research is done on the desktop.

It will probably never run the full version, but there is a way to get that same benefit today (if you can tolerate some delay/control issues):

Who would have ever thought that someone could edit video on an iPhone, but people do. In coming generations, I doubt there's much limitation on what the iPad will eventually be able to do.

Jeremy, the Ipad is a very complex tool/computer, but not like L4 needs. even the netbooks have a hard time with L4. But the ipad can do well with the logos app.

Logos just needs to revamp their iPad app to include an offline search function when not connected to wifi. These apps will only get better in time we just need to be patient. You want a Atom based tablet, go for it, I'll stick with my iPad it does what I need, I've got a laptop and desktop if I need more. And, it is much more than a large iPhone, if you had one and used it you'd realize that.

Personally I use the iPad and Logos primarily for reading at this stage. However, I'd love to see the following:
- Search of books that you've locally stored
- Highlighting (if nothing else, this would make it eminently useful)
- Note taking (even if not searchable)
- cross references that work offline for books that you've asked to take offline
- the ability to have two or three books visible at once
- the ability to see what books I've set to available "offline"
By the way, I didn't see it covered, but HP officially pulled the tablet project when it bought Palm, so expect a non-windows version of it later this year. Not sure how useful that will be for Logos though.
