SUGGESTION: A bundle of books on canonicity

I've tried to come up with a list that takes into account the three major branches of the Church - Western, Byzantine and Church of the East. I've also tried to take into account the degree to which canon was a moving target in the West. I also recognized that English had to be the language of the majority of the books. I have not included some personal favorites. I have concentrated on the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures which is where the majority of differences occur.
- Die Einheit Der Schrift Und Die Vielfalt Des Kanons / The Unity of Scripture and the Diversity of the Canon by John Barton (Editor), Michael Wolter (Editor)
- A Scholastical History of the Canon of the Holy Scripture: Or the Certain and Indubitate Books Thereof, as They Are Received in the Church of England (1672) by John Cosin (Editor)
- One Scripture or Many?: Canon from Biblical, Theological, and Philosophical Perspectives by Christine Helmer (Editor), Christof Landmesser (Editor)
- The Authority of the Bible: Theories of Inspiration, Revelation, and the Canon of Scripture by Robert Karl Gnuse
- History of the Canon of the Holy Scriptures in the Christian Church by Eduard Reuss
- The Septuagint as Christian Scripture: Its Prehistory and the Problem of Its Canon by Martin Hengel, Mark E Biddle (Translator), Robert Hanhart (Introduction by)
- On the Canon of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament, and on the Apocrypha: Eleven Discourses (1848) by Christopher Wordsworth
- Le Livre Des Canons Armeniens (kanonagirk' Hayoc') De Yovhannes Awinec'i. Eglise, Droit Et Societe En Armenie Du... (Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium) ... Christianorum Orientalium 606, Subsidia 116) by A Mardirossian
- Exploring the Origins of the Bible: Canon Formation in Historical, Literary, and Theological Perspective (Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology) by Emanuel Tov (Editor), Craig Evans (Editor)
- The Shape of Sola Scriptura by Keith A. Mathison
- The
Bible, the Church, and Authority: The Canon of the Christian Bible in
History and Theology (Michael Glazier Books) by
Joseph
T. Lienhard - The
Censor, the Editor, and the Text: The Catholic Church and the Shaping
of the Jewish Canon in the Sixteenth Century (Jewish Culture and
Contexts) by Amnon
Raz-Krakotzkin and Jackie Feldman - The
Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance
by Bruce
M. Metzger - a number of Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican and Presbyterian church documents
- a number of early documents listing canons
Please add additional resources to round it out theologically and historically.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Thank you Martha. After a presentation on canonicity at BibleTech last month, I have a personal interest in looking into this subject in depth.

You're welcome. It is a fascinating topic that only becomes more interesting as you delve into the nooks and crannies outside the West.

Great list. Some of those are already in Logos format. Some others which I already have which should be included in such a bundle are:
- The Canon of Scripture by F.F. Bruce
- The Making of the New Testament: Origin, Collection, Text & Canon by Arthur G. Patzia
- The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church and its Background in Early Judaism by Roger Beckwith

Please add Robert Laird Harris' Inspiration and Canonicity of the Bible: A Historical and Exegetical Study. Also Philip Comforts The Origin of the Bible

Even though they are written in German, I would like to suggest two books published by Neukirchener Verlag :
- I.Baldermann et al., Zum Problem des biblischen Kanons [Jahrbuch für Biblische Theologie 3] Neukirchen-Vluyn 1988 (contains articles written by J.Maier, M.Saebø
, G.Stemberger and others).- J.Frey & M.Becker (ed.), Qumran und der biblische Kanon [Biblisch-Theologische Studien 92] Neukirchen-Vluyn 2009.
And one other title (because of its classic reformed point of view and because it's not in German [:)] ):
William Cunningham's essay on canonicity in his Theological Lectures (1878).

Now this is starting to look good. I think L4 will be able to translate the German resources for us english users.

Here is what I am e-mailing to the official Logos suggestions box:
This is a proposed collection on canon with input from several individuals. I believe it is representative of the material we would like available if copyright holders permit. If you check the forum thread that produced this list (http://community.logos.com/forums/p/15220/122632.aspx#122632) you will see that a broad spectrum of users are represented (broad not sizable).

I think these two are the standards:
* The Biblical Canon: Its Origin, Transmission, and Authority by Lee Martin McDonald
* The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church and its Background in Early Judaism by Roger Beckwith
As suggestions to add to the list of MJ Smith:
* McDonald, The Canon Debate
* Becker, Kanon in Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion: Kanonisierungsprozesse religiöser Texte von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart - Ein Handbuch (Contains articles both in German and English)

Although I already have some of the works, I think a bundle is a great idea. [Might be an easier sell to have only English language titles.]
