Searching sections of a resource

I know that I can search within headings, but is it possible to restrict a search to an individual section of a resource?

For example, I have a journal in my Logos library with 159 volumes.  Within each volume is a section entitled "Letters to the Editor".  How would I go about only searching within that section?

Unfortunately, that's not possible. You can work around it for a single resource (by specifying page numbers), but that wouldn't work for multiple resources.

If the journals are tagged with the "Journal Article" label, you could try a NOT search once Logos 7.10 is released:

    "a phrase" NOT WITHIN {Label Journal Article}

I think you misunderstood (or I did! [:)]). The OP is wanting to restrict a search to ONLY one article, not restrict a search FROM an article. At least that is how I understood it.

I haven't thought about it before, but it is a good suggestion. If someone wanted to search a particular chapter in a theology book, for example. I do understand that the results can be listed by chapter, so it isn't of the highest priority.

IMO the most potentially useful and often asked for implementation of this (related) concept would be a milestone search of a Dictionary/Encyclopedia Headword. Where one could search for a verse such as <John 1:1> WITHIN {Milestone <Headword "Trinity">} in my Encyclopedias collection or Mark Barnes' example glossolalia WITHIN {Milestone <Headword "Spiritual Gifts">} to search all the dictionary articles on Spiritual Gifts

I think what he was suggesting is that, since the section desired is not tagged, the best option is to exclude all the sections that are tagged. It may still pick up unrelated hits but it will narrow the results better than searching everything.

One search idea is "Letters to the Editor" in Heading OR Large Text followed by key word(s).

([field heading, largetext] "Letters to the Editor") BEFORE 88 WORDS (reply, translation)

Caveat: proximity search cannot be limited to "Letters to the Editor" section.

...but that wouldn't make sense... I don't think. I could be wrong. I have been before! [:P]

First, it would be very time consuming to find all the sections which HAVE been tagged to exclude them. Second, if a section hasn't been tagged, it should just simply fall under the last tag... right?

If a journal has "Journal Article" tagging, then our content production staff has added metadata to each article to identify its author, date, subject(s), etc. (This tagging powers the "Journals" section in the Passage Guide.)

A search for {Label Journal Article} will find all these tagged sections in your library.

The OP says he wants to search within "Letters to the Editor". Letters to the Editor are not a journal article, therefore, they will not have the "Journal Article" label.

Assuming that the journals in question are tagged, then the OP can narrow down his search results by a) building a collection of the resources to search within, then b) searching for "text NOT WITHIN {Label Journal Article}".

The NOT WITHIN search will eliminate hits that occur within journal articles, leaving results in correspondence, book reviews, indexes and other journal content that is not an article. This might make it easier to find the information the OP is looking for without having to search one journal at a time.

Here's an example. You can see that the search finds "the" within the editor's note and contents of the journal (not an article) but doesn't find "the" within an article itself. For a search for "the", this reduced the hit count from 17,199 to 266: many fewer hits to review.
