Latest updates on DVD?

Is there a DVD set available that contains Logos 4.0b SR-1? I am getting ready to upgrade my motherboard and reinstall Windows 7 64 bit. It would be nice if I didn't have to completely download all of the updates and my resources. If there is a way to do this more easily I am open to suggestions. It's bad enough to have to reinstall Windows 7, and download all of the updates since its release, Office 2007 and all of its updates and a plethora of other apps that I have installed.

I know with 3.0 I was able to continually update my DVDs for a small fee and thus as I ugraded or changed hardware the downloads were minimal being limited to resources I had purchased as downloads only and any updates not on the DVD I owned.

This is probably answered someplace in thie maze of threads but I have been unable to find the answer(s).

Why not follow the first item in this FAQ and make a backup of all your resource files? Once you have done that, and installed your new Windows 7, and installed Logos 4 you can copy the resource files over:

Since you are not faint of heart regarding replacement of your system board, there are more instructions to look at here BEFORE you install Logos 4:

Tm Lord's suggestion (above this post) is the best way to handle it. With so many upgrades and tweeks constantly being added, it is almost impossible to get a current DVD. Your best best is to make sure your program is current and do an immediate backup just before your re-installation. If you miss anything it will update online after you're done. My "Media Only" DVDs will probably never be used again. They are Sooo outdated now.

My 2000 Ford Escort is outdated, but it still gets me where I want to go with minimal hassle and great gas mileage (32 mpg). I am not a great fan of having to do huge downloads in order to install any application let alone one the size of Logos 4. There is a lot to be said for having media in hand when doing a fresh install after upgrading hardware. If I still lived in a rural area where broadband Internet is not available as I did until last summer, then I would have to bypas even buying a program that requires the internet to install it. At least with version 3 I had 90% of the program and all of my resources on hard media. I could use it as installed from said media until I was able to head to the nearest public access point and get the rest of the updates.

Just one more reason why I regret buying Logos 4. Given the chance for do over I would pass on it and stick with 3.0. As a matter of fact I will probably pass on even reinstalling 4.0 after my motherboard upgrade.

No, replacing the motherboard is not something that bothers me. I have built and used custom computers at work and home for over twenty years. Also done the same for friends and family.

YES PLEASE!!! We need a DVD update service. I'll explain the problem from another point of view.

Missionaries, Pastors, Bible translators and Christian workers who are serving outside North America, Europe and parts of Asia do not always have access to high speed internet. Here in Africa, in major cities we have access in some places to DSL, but the speeds are often as low as 3kbps (dialup). We also suffer from connection disconnects and resets. Many areas only have dial-up and some simply don't have the internet at all.

At present, I need to download 1.2 GB of updates. If I go down to the local internet cafe or hotel, I would need to stay down there for several days to get it downloaded. Essentially, this means it's impossible. Logos 4 is telling me that it is ready to download, but there's nothing that I can do.

What's more frustrating is that if you buy a newly released book for L4, there's no way to select downloading just this one book. So in effect you need to download everything else to get the one thing that you really need or want for your ministry work. I understand the simplicity and user friendliness of L4, but this download all or nothing approach doesn't even allow me to at least download some of the critical things I need.

There is the option to buy a media disk - http://www.logos.com/products/details/5579 , but this is still at 4.0a. A bit depressing as 4.0c is already in beta!

I have written, called and pleaded with anyone at Logos who will listen to launch a quarterly subscription DVD update service with all the latest updates on all resources and software. I know that this would not be cheap because I suspect the market for such a thing is pretty small, but I am willing to pay a premium to stay reasonably up to date. I suspect others in my situation would do the same because Logos on the field is absolutely amazing. There's no way I would ever have access to these kinds of resources otherwise.

Mat 28:19 says "Go into all nations making disciples..." I sure wished I could take a reasonably up to date copy of Logos 4 with me! [:)]

I agree that a quarterly subscription service would be wonderful. And I don't think it would be as expensive as many would have us believe. I worked for a disc manufacturing facility for many years and we did small order (under 1000) replication for numerous companies over the years. The cost was low and the more discs replicated, the lower the cost per disc. Creating the master required most of the work. And if they can have everything available for downloading then it isn't much harder to create a master disc.

The problem is Logos management has fallen into the same misguided perception common throughout the hardware/software industry. That everybody has access to high speed internet service. Not to mention that there is a large portion of the market base who cannot afford high speed service even when available.

I agree that a disc update system is needed. I do believe it is coming (can't say when, I hope soon) for those who have capped or slow internet access.

I have wondered from time to time if I shouldn't see if I could get someone in the Logos empire to just burn me a quick DVD and pop it in the post. I don't even care if it is branded!

I doubt that a DVD is one stop solution to this dilemma! IF it contains the 1.2 GB of updates you have refused then there's a chance that the revised download will be the NEW purchase (pray it is small as even 5MB will take at least 30 minutes at 3KB/s, and 8x longer if you really meant 3kbps). Also remember that the DVD is restricted to the books available in the base libraries up to Scholar's Gold and Platinum. A more effective solution is have a good friend at home put the books you need on a DVD!

I'm not sure that this is an adequate solution. From what I understand, L4 books are not available for manual download like L3 books are. Regardless, I guess I am suggesting that the "good friend" that does this is Logos! (obviously for a price)

Indeed. An update service would need to compliment the existing base media. The reason I propose DVDs, is that they are relatively cheap to produce and post around the world. Even if it takes several DVDs every 3 months, this would be not a technical but rather practical challenge. Microsoft and other software vendors produce DVDs in this quantity and volume on a regular basis for their developers.

Anyhow, I've said my bit on this subject. It is a real problem and sadly undermines to a degree what is an extremely great resource for workers around the world, particularly for those working in developing situations which would never have access to seminary type materials otherwise.

I hope a solution eventually could be found, otherwise our only other solution is to wait for investment to come to remote parts of the world to create high speed internet connections.

This is assuming that a friend has purchased the books that you need! So I'm not sure that this is an adequate solution.

If you have a good friend anything is possible!
