Oxford Bible Commentary Updated for Logos4

The Oxford Bible Commentary exists for Logos, but only (as far as I know) in Logos2 format. Logos3 does a good job showing it as a commentary, but Logos4 needs some "coaxing" to even show it as a monograph, and it does not function as a commentary in Logos4. So, I think it would be nice to update the Oxford Bible Commentary for proper use in Logos4. (Thank for listening.)

There is a way that you can make the Oxford Bible Commentary as well as any Monograph book work in Logos 4 you can either go to http://community.logos.com/forums/t/6249.aspx?PageIndex=2 and see the whole thing or do the following which is only a copy of the same posting.

Well, I finally found out just how to make full use of this commentary in L4! And it works great!

Go into Tools click Collections
Make a new Collection with that resource (Or any other old 2.1 resource)
Then go into Guides
Click "Make a New Guide Template", make one titled something like "My Passage Guide"
Add that Collection to the template and save it.

then Start using the new My Passage Guide with the book you want to use added to it and it works great for me!!!!!

Yes, I know - [;)] - I am using ~that~ method (of yours - thanks!) to allow Logos4 to "accept" the Oxford Bible Commentary as a monograph (as I said, "Logos4 needs some 'coaxing' to even show it as a monograph, and it does not function as a commentary in Logos4"). The problem is that the "commentary" still doesn't "behave" as a commentary (specifically, it doesn't link to each verse on a one-to-one basis). That is to say, my "Oxford Bible Commentary collection" presents me with a number of (maybe) relevant selections to choose from when I do a scripture search. Workable, but not ideal. ~That's~ why I think it would be a nice idea to update the commentary for Loos4. [Does ~your~ OBC function as a ~commentary~ in ~your~ Logos4?]

Yes, I would like to see this resource updated for L4 as well.My workaround is to have the icon for OBC in the taskbar at the top of the L4 screen. Then, once I do my passage guide search, I click on the OBC icon and it opens to the relevant passage.

May be a baling wire/chewing gum/and duct tape solution, but it works for me.

No I hate to admit that even though it does come up in passage guide and it does better than nothing it still, well, a monograph just doesn't work good at all! To be honest though, while OBC does need to be put up high on the list of books that are upgraded to their proper status. A lot of books don't work like they should!

Everyone including Logos ought to look through their library and see just how many books there are that should be listed as a different type than just Monograph books like (and this is only to name a few)

Oxford Bible Commentary - monograph - should be a commentary
Be What You Are - Warren Wiersbe - monograph - should be commentary
Alone with God - MacArthur - monograph - Should be a devotional
Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations - monograph -should either be encyclopedia or Sermon Illustrations
Dictionary of Bible Themes - Monograph - should be a Dictionary

I could just keep on writing and writing but you and Logos knows the list (And I just have Leaders Library think about the larger packages! Maybe they ought to make a way I can list a book where I want to!

I believe the problem is that Logos doesn't have the legal right to make those updates to the file. It's why it's completely unavailable to the L4 Mac users like me, who own it and can no longer access it [:'(]

Well, I am ~very~ pleased to say that Logos did just update the Oxford Bible Commentary, and a new resource with the file name of "oxbibcom.logos4" on my hard drive. Furthermore, within Logos4, the resource now is listed as a "Commentary" (not as a "Monograph", and, when I do a scripture search, the OBC will be properly linked to in the search results.

I was very surprised, and very impressed that Logos would take the time to update this Logos2 (I think) resource. (Thank you very much, Logos.) [:)]

WRONG! I am a mac user and i have mine working perfectly… all you need to do is place your logos too files into your resource folder and it will operate perfectly as a Logos 2 file. They are compatible just don;t update, but almost always pops up every time in my passage guide.

And you're wrong too. Just placing a file in a folder doesn't accomplish anything. He'd need the scan command and a restart as well. And that's provided he's got an actual file to put into the folder.

Furthermore, the scan command will only work if L4 recognizes that he's got a license, which isn't certain that it does.

Plus his post is more than two years old, so hopefully he's solved his problem before now. [:)]

If not, Fred's post was about alerting people to the fact that the file has been updated for L4, which means that if L4 does recognize that he's got a license, the new file ought to download automatically, without any of the steps above. And if it doesn't recognize it, the steps won't do any good; he'll need to call Logos to have it unlocked.

LOL I am often wrong so don;t hurt me any, I failed to notice the time stamp. And thank you for pointing out the step i failed to mention of scanning the directory. And at that time in another forum we were told it would work… but what happened was the code for reading old Logos files had inadvertently never been ported into the mac. Had i actually seen the date stamp I would have realized it was solved long ago...
