Functionality on desktop vs web app

Trying to decide if I should upgrade mac version to use desktop or if I should use web app instead? Would be useful if there was a link showing major differences in web app vs desktop (already see there is no highlighting or custom layouts on web app)

Yes, to run Logos 7.12 you will need a minimum OS version of 10.11 as per https://community.logos.com/forums/p/152976/932012.aspx#932012

Other can comment better that I can on Mac upgrades but I understand that most Mac users keep current with operating system releases. Certainly in terms of Logos - getting to version 7 is a good move and ensures you stay on a supported platform.

Yes - and I think that this is going to be the case for some time. Also its important to recognise that there are some things that work in the web app when using a desktop / laptop that don't work well (if at all) from a mobile device such as a tablet.

If it all possible I would recommend doing the OS and Logos upgrade if there are things you need that are not available in the web app

Not that I have seen - sorry. And the state of the web app is continually changing so probably not feasible to maintain such a document effectively.

The biggest different - for me - is that while you can "right-click" a word in a resource on the desktop and access the context menu this is not possible on mobile devices.

Yes - it is available through the right-click menu on the desktop.

But its also important to know that the notes / highlighting system being developed on the web app is the initial implementation of an entirely new notes / highlighting system. Once it has developed sufficiently it will be rolled out across the desktop and mobile app environments as well. Until that happens notes and highlights made on the web app will not sync with the desktop and mobile apps nor vice versa

One consideration is do you use personal books. Which most likely will never be available to the web app. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that non mobile enabled books like the Jerome Biblical Commentary and the Oxford Bible Commentary are accessible through the WEB APP. The web app is always being improved can feel a bit slow on my internet (I am satellite based, on a more robust cable/DSL system it may be fine). For ChromeBook users and UNIX users FL has provided a very good solution that I know they are working on getting as close to the Desktop APP experience as possible, for me I am glad to stay within the framework of my own computer and not rely on network connectivity for my Bible Study, partly because I do not have a solid internet connection but even my friends and in laws in the city and bigger centres complain about lost internet (usually under a day, although my mother in law was with out hers for almost a week at home and 2 days at work (storm related and MOST people in her town of 10,000 were up with in a day and half). And at least she had her cell phone for internet, where as I am in a cell dead zone on my farm.

Might you tell what the 'possible issues' are with upgrading the Mac. As you probably know the proportion of OSX user running the latest version of the software is huge compared with other operating system users. Generally glitches are sorted quickly and if your system is really old then the installer will limit your upgrades to the latest compatible version of the software.

Remaining on legacy operating systems tends to leave one vulnerable to security risks and makes effective technical support difficult.

It's more of a precaution since I have my personal apps, work VPN, and other stuff on my mac, I do have current backup and I will look to do upgrades this weekend. Bottom line it's little frustration that there are so many differences desktop vs web app vs mobile.

I think that would be wise.

Bottom line it's little frustration that there are so many differences desktop vs web app vs mobile.

The main difficulty as I understand it is history, Logos was a mature Windows only program when they decided to port it to the Mac hence there are some Windows(ish) hangovers and some unmaclike behaviour.

Once as the popularity of the Mac version became evident along came the iPad and a cry to make Logos work on a third operation system.

Really the first tablet versions were designed as 'book readers' but they have grown in complexity over the years but there is still a good way to go before the tablet can match the desktop. Anyway who would want 8 panels open on the screen of an iPad? What works on a twin monitor 27in screens is hardly likely to be that useful on a 10.5 in tablet.

However Faithlife have exceeded my expectations in the development of the Logos Bible App and I believe there is more and better to come.
