Internet Connection

I just wanted to ask a quick question. I have just bought a new desktop computer. I am really wanting to put it relatively far from my router for wireless connect. Its signal strength is fair. In general, will I not be hampered in speed doing normal study and searching? I understand downloading may take a little more time. Indexing and general operations will only be affected by the processor and ram and video capabilities?

That is currently my setup. I connect to the router at 54 Mbps and via that to the internet at between 1.5-4.5 Mbps, so there is no way that I can see that my router connection speed is going to restrict or affect my internet connection speed. It is my understanding that as long as your router connection speed is greater than your internet connection speed, there should be no problem. There may be other factors at play here of which I am blissfully ignorant. If that is the case, perhaps someone more network savvy will let us know.

Alan thanks for response. With this response in mind, I want to clarify things. I am on a dsl line, I think it is the slowest for now. Not sure how fast... I have from that modem/router a wireless feature (no idea of its "speed.") I have 2 computers using that wireless interface. The first is an old laptop. Its signal is "excellent" I can browse websites and post here without real slowdowns. I was able to get logos downloads fairly fast. My indexing was "slow"

As described in the previous post, I have bought a much more powerful desktop (processor, ram, video.) I am using a wireless interface for this "fast" desktop as well. It's signal strength is "fair" to "good." It seems I can browse and come here at good speed. The downloading of my first program, I felt, took a while. This is not a real problem to me as I understand my signal is "fair" to "good."

My big question....L4 generally works from processor, ram, and video card? Will this internet connection slow me way down? Do I need to try and move this computer for an "excellent" signal? Is most of the L4 features and workings done on the local computer or does the internet connectivity need to be real good? I just thought. We can turn off internet...I would just leave it off and work without it but connect once a week for udating all my notes, collections, resources, etc. That seems then that L4 is going to scream? I hope. My laptop works but just a bit slow.

Mount your wireless router as high as you can to clear office obstacles like cabinets and screens to get a clear "shot" at the computer. If the computer has a rear mounted wireless card ensure the antenna is facing the router and/or get an extension for the antenna. Tweak the antenna orientation for the best signal ie. "good" to "very good".

A few things arise from your second post.

The first is the speed of your network connection. It should be possible to check your network speed. If there is a wireless icon in your desktop tray (bottom right hand corner, then hovering your mouse over it should reveal your network connection, your speed, your signal strength and your status. If not then navigate to your network connection and you should be able to find the information there.
As to the speed of your internet connection (ADSL is what most people have. I can vary from about 1Mbps to up to 20 Mbps (I wish!)). Open the following URL in your browser http://www.speedtest.net/ (don't worry BT recommend this site for speed checking) The first time, as I recall, (I've been using it almost daily for about six months) you use it you should enter your postcode, then it will offer a series of station to measure it to/from, choose one and click begin test. It's important that you are running no other program or any internet connection on your other network computers. Then in a few seconds it will run 3 tests which will give you your ping rate, your download speed and your upload speed. Then you can compare your internet connection to your network connection to ensure that your network speed is greater than your internet speed. Those speeds can, and do vary, at different times of day.
As to your signal strength, that tends not to affect your speed but your stability. Your ping rate will tell you how good that is. You can check your ping rate in more detail by clicking on the PingTest link on the SpeedTest page or opening http://www.pingtest.net/ and choosing your nearest testing point.

Throughput on a wireless connection is absolutely affected by distance from the router! Check any performance tests of routers on the Internet, they always test at various distances because different routers do better or worse from different distances - some are blazing fast up close, and horrible further away.

NBest thing to do is just run one of the INternet connection throughput tests on the Internet (I use Speakeasy at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/, and then decide if you are happy with it.

You internet connection, fast or slow, should not affect Logos 4's performance as it come to daily use and indexing. I suppose if your internet was exceedingly slow (Unlikely with a DSL connection) syncing could make Logos "hiccup" from time to time; however, if this was the case you could just set use Internet to "No" and manually sync and check for updates.
