open favourite books for a reference or selection?

Hi,

I am having a mental block here tonight.

Is it possible when reading to highlight a portion of scripture and then have L4 open all my available commentaries to that particular verse from the right click context menu?

As with the phrase here in 1 Ti 5:16 by way of example

Yes. You have to select the "Reference" tab on the right side of the right-click menu. Then you can choose Passage Guide on the left side. Or even better, if you've set up a custom Passage Guide which just has the Commentaries section in it (I've made one called PG - Commentaries), you can select that. It's much faster than doing a full Passage Guide.

I had followed Marks guide and made a My Passage Guide a couple of weeks ago. It never occurred to me to do the same for commentaries, I was getting bogged down in "collections" and couldn't figure out how to get it to show up. I'll blame the nasty migraine that has plagued me all day.

Having gone through the videos I had to redo my list. I concur with Mark when he says it's a pity there isn't

"a separate priority list...that's not how Logos works"

but...his tip on adding a commentary series has my priority list looking much cleaner. Thank you both Mark and Rosie.

Is there a way to have those top hits actually open automatically, or do I have to manually click each one?

(oh for a library like Marks...he has more commentaries than I have resources in my whole library!)

Well, you're learning how to make Logos work more powerfully for you. That's great! The only problem is that when people learn a little more, then they begin to imagine even more they could do with it, and pretty soon they want Logos to do their laundry, too. Just kidding. [;)]

There isn't currently a way to get Logos to open multiple commentaries automatically at once, though that has been requested. The closest you can come to that now is to set up a Favorite Commentaries layout, with a Bible in the left tile, and all the commentaries you'd want to open in separate tabs in the right tile, and have them all linked together (including the Bible) on the same Link Set (drop down the panel icon menu and select a Link Set: A through F). Then you'd navigate in the Bible to the passage in question (or you might already be there, if you were doing a study). The commentaries will all automatically scroll to that passage as well. This works particularly well with one-volume commentaries and commentary series that cover the entire Bible (both OT and NT). It's a little less helpful if some of your favorite commentaries only cover a few books or only OT or only NT. Because those commentary tabs won't scroll if there's no corresponding volume in them for the passage you're looking up.

To be honest, I really want to make the most of L4, so I am soaking up all the learning I can. It's a shame we can't have a Camp Logos here in New Zealand!

The layout idea is a good one, but what you've helped me accomplish already is a great help....and a few clicks to open the books is certainly not taxing. My poor old laptop takes an age to switch between busy layouts.

So much to learn...but its fun, and a great way to study.

I would imagine that Morris Proctor is probably already at work making an upgrade to the Live Camp Logos training videos he made for L3. L4 is different enough from L3 that I'd wait for the L4 version of the DVDs. Once those are available you can have your own private Camp Logos in New Zealand. [:)]

It isn't in the Suggestions forum so I guess it won't get picked up by Logos when they're surfing for new ideas for features. You could either post your own request in the Suggestions forum, or add it to the UserVoice Logos forum where people can vote on it (http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-4). I did a search there (for "commentaries") and it doesn't seem that anyone else has already posted it there.

I wonder if it is not a feature many would use, given the lack of discussion about it? If so, perhaps it is best left alone so other more important features are considered.

You are correct. The Series field is not user editable. However the fact that this one isn't tagged with a series is a problem in the metadata, and it has already been reported on http://wiki.logos.com/Metadata_correction_proposals,so expect a fix to it in some upcoming update of the resources.

In the meantime, you could use the My Tags field (which is a user editable field for tagging things however you want). In fact, many of us have discovered that tags are a great way to set up collections. I have gone through and tagged all my commentaries according to what sort of commentary they are, based on a rough breakdown into categories: language, critical/scholarly, homiletical/exegetical/pastoral, and application. These categories are somewhat subjective and can be some overlap, but I got a list of suggested categories for all the commentaries available in Logos format from one of the MP Seminars employees. My tags are LangComm, CritComm, HomComm, and AppComm. Then to set up a collection of all my homiletical commentaries, I use the rule mytag:HomComm. It's easier than having to add every single commentary series name to your collection rule.

You can add a tag to a whole group of books at once by selecting them all in the Library (click on the first one in the group then shift+click on the last one) and then open the info panel if it isn't open already (click on the "i" icon), click "add tag," type your tag, and press Enter.
