An official word from Logos?

Has anyone heard if there will actually be improvements in the speed for Logos 4? Many in the forum have been assuming that, but I'm not sure if Logos has officially said that.

I can't dish out money for a new laptop, so I am kind of bummed in the meantime. My laptop is only 1 year old, but the integrated video card is killing me. I wish they could make a less graphic intensive version for some laptops and netbooks.

I'm hoping to at least hear that some help is on the way.

Hi Joel, I too have a new laptop, and it has a hard time with Logos 4. On uservoice.com, the fourth most requested item for Logos 4 is "Focus on Code/Performance Optimization." Bob did indicate that they are currently working on this request.

I use a laptop that is a about a year old. it has a 2.16 Ghz processor and 4gigs of Ram. Initially when I started using L4 there were some performance issues, but those have improved. First I am currently running 4.0c Beta 3 and I think Logos has been making some changes to the code that improve the speed of the software. I noticed significant improvements when 4.0b was released.

I also applied a couple of the suggestions made on the forums such disabling desktop composition and disabling display scaling on high DPI settings. Finally I changed the windows option for managing the computers performance to maximize performance. This may result in you having to go back in and select windows features that are disabled by this selection (e.g I went back into that screen and enabled thumbnails in my directories so that I could see pictures rather than system icons.

Finally, when I went from Vista to Win 7 I saw some improvement. I am not an expert in this area so I cannot tell you why there was such a difference between the two operating systems, I just know I wanted some of the features of Win 7 and improved performance of L4 was gravy (I'm from the south so we like gravy).

Try searching the Wiki for some of the performance tweaks mentioned above and others people have suggested. I also encourage you to be patient as the Logos team continues to improve speed with future releases.

Logos are committed to WPF within .NET for graphics so improvements will only come from Microsoft and perhaps from Logos' own debugging of WPF errors that can be seen in logs (they don't seem to cause visible problems but handling many non-fatal errors can impact performance). With .NET 4.0 just released there will be some improvements but difficult to know if they affect graphics performance.

Due to the indexing, L4 seems slightly faster than L3. But L4 does a lot more for basically the same speed.

This is getting technical, but the graphics interface (GDI) of Windows XP, 2000 and older OS was replaced by a new system in Vista and Windows 7 based on a 2D (two dimensional) DirectX which had been originally designed for 3D games. .NET is the applications interface for L4 (L3 used Internet Explorer) and .NET uses WPF for its graphics interface. Both WPF and the driver for your graphics card have to handle these two graphics interfaces - but a much better explanantion can be found at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2d-windows-gdi,2547.html

There isn't a clear cut reason that Windows 7 gives better graphics results (performance) in L4 except that it usually comes with graphics cards that handle its requirements, based on the Direct2D interface. But problems usually arise with integrated graphics chips (as opposed to cards) especially when WPF has to deal with the older GDI of Windows XP.

The .NET applications interface is integrated with Vista and Windows 7 and may give better performance than with XP, where it is installed as an application. Again there is no clear-cut reason that Windows 7 will perform better other than the improvements it brought to management (and stability) of applications like L4.

As I understand it, Bob has hung a sign in the office that reads "code first, optimize later" The idea being that it's more important to get the features out the door sooner rather than later.

It doesn't mean that optimizations aren't coming, quite the contrary; it means that optimizations will follow features.

As for performance of WPF in .NET 4, it was very much a design goal to improve it. While it's a very technical/software programming description, you might get a flavor of the improvements at this site. Speeding up rendering was one area you will see they worked on quite a bit.
