I've reported this inside the app as well.
When opening a split window items from "documents" or "favorites" open in a new tab rather than in the split window. This was tested on a Galaxy Note8 and Note3 phone as well as a Kindle HDX 8.9 tablet. Items from "library" and "tools" open properly in the split window.
