My computer was destroyed in Harvey and I finally am about to build a new windows desktop computer

Please help me if you can and will.

Here is my question. For a few hours each week the computer will be used in a graphics oriented business application requiring a fast intel 4 core processor in the i7 arena and a top of the line nvidia 1080ti graphics card.

The rest of the time the computer is dedicated to running Logos version 7 with a large library and nothing else. I am pretty sure that the graphics card can handle anything Logos throws at it; but, I don't know enough about how Logos uses the cpu vs the gpu so I can't answer the question as to whether or not getting a fancier cpu will allow Logos to run faster.

If a faster cpu will make a difference in the many huge searches i do each day I can justify getting the 10 core 19-7900x skylake processor.... or even the 7980xe. Those fancy processors would be wasted and overkill for everything else I do other than Logos (I do not do virtual reality or play games). The fancy multi core processors are potentially wasted on Logos.... I do not know.... and I sure don't want them if they don't help.

I do recall that my pre Harvey top of the line macbook air was overwhelmed on a regular basis by Logos and I vowed to make sure my next about to be built system could search my 100 gig library at the speed of light (or almost) .

Anybody who can help me with this decision; to get the fancier cpu or not... I sure appreciate your input.

Rob, if you are not thinking of doing so already, get a fast SSD drive and 16 GB of RAM. The SSD and enough RAM to run a quad-core processor well are probably the most important for fast Logos functioning. My desktop is fairly new and it has these specs, plus a fairly top-of-the line I7 quad core processor and Logos runs very well.

When I check my thread-by-thread performance while Logos is running I rarely see all 8 threads running at max, and usually only 4 being used at any time. The exception seems to be at various points during a big indexing job when all 8 eight cores are involved, sometimes just about maxing out the CPU. This doesn’t happen often, so for me more cores would not be worth the money they’d cost.

That may also be good for Logos. I recently replaced my old graphics card and the computer is otherwise same, and it speeded up my complex layouts (with Greek and Hebrew interlinear, discourse markings and semantic markings)

Opening a Bible using Logos 7.12 Beta 3 with many visual filters shows all CPU's (in a 2011 MacBook Air) being used for visual filter searches.

Am I right to presume that Logos relies upon the cpu to do all those incredibly valuable visual filters.... and the GPU doesn't carry the brunt....

So... having a beast of a gpu and a whimp cpu isn't enough for a full boar do battle with the Devil machine if you want it to be guick quick quick.... you need a very solid gpu and as many cores as you can afford.... at least if visual filters are a big part of your logos use.

User speculation is CPU threads used for searching words, lemma's, ... (using SQLite database indexes) with GPU used for display rendering.

By the way, GeForce GTX 1080 TI is # 3 on this video benchmark list => https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (that shows GTX 1080 TI is 11 % faster than GTX 1070 TI while costing hundreds more)

Not know about Solid State Disk (SSD) speed in less expensive configuration. Read and Write speed above 2000 MBps would be noticeable in Logos, which is substantially faster than SATA III SSD speeds near 500 MBps. With my library index file being 17 GB, can dream about a computer with more RAM (64 GB could allow operating system to cache index files in RAM).

With my library index file being 17 GB, can dream about a computer with more RAM (64 GB could allow operating system to cache index files in RAM).

My library index is 4 GB and I have 32 GB memory but for me it looks like Logos is not caching the index - when I look at the data with the Windows task manager and what I can conclude about it. Anyway, it seems to find words quickly enough for an impatient user when using the "everything" option (library search - search all resources).

It will be cached if used frequently, but that doesn't mean the whole index (8 files). File caching on Windows may be quite different to the Mac (KS4J). But SSD speed reduces the need for caching. Storing the index in memory would be faster than SSD, but that is not caching, as it is using memory as a storage device/disk.
