Passage guides take a long time to generate if they have Biblical People in them. This is a known issue and we're working on a fix for a future (i.e. post A18 alpha). On my Late 2008 Macbook 13.3" Passage Guides can take up to 10 minutes to finish loading. They do come back, but it just takes a while.
If you don't need biblical people you can always stop the passage guide after the section you need has loaded by clicking the Stop button.
