Can you learn Biblical Greek & Hebrew with Logos?

Hi,

I had a look on the site, and can't find much about this, but I am assuming you could do this with such advanced software. I want to get either the Scholar's or Scholar's: Silver, but want to get some resources to learn Greek (and Hebrew too, but mostly Greek) that I can use in Logos.

Does anybody know of any they would recommend?

I'm sure I saw something only recently on just this topic. Not sure if it was PrePub, on the blog or what but definitely saw something aimed at teaching biblical Greek/no previous knowledge assumed/required. It was a DVD rather than download. I'll have a scout around and see if I can pull a link but dare say someone will beat me to it.

Will be a good place to start. We just finished Summer's book (the first one in the list) in our Greek class, and it was excellent material and it helped me to understand the language a lot. After that, you can purchase Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics from Wallace, but make sure you start out with the essentials, as Wallace is A LOT more in depth.

There are some very good beginning Greek grammars avalible in Logos format, opinions will vary greatly on which beginning grammar is the best, but of what Logos is now offering I like this one the best http://www.logos.com/products/details/5195. Mounce's grammar, Basics of Biblical Greek, is not in Logos format yet, but it is very good and I think for something like a begining grammar you might want it in hard back form any way. Bill Mounce has a great supporting web site for his grammar. If you want to go for free try Ted Hilderbrandt's web site out: http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/ted_hildebrandt/index.cfm. The text and work book are in PDF and there are instructional videos. Ted also has a commercial drilling product you can purchase. Finally, you might want to go the Classical Greek route, this does have a lot going for it, the Athenaze series get you actually reading Greek right a way and the stories I find are interesting. The Intitute of Biblical Greek uses Athenaze as their text and offer a very good on line course: http://www.biblicalgreek.org/about/.

Maybe not but their introductory video suggests you would get to the same level as a 3rd year traditional Greek/Hebrew student. That's learning quite a lot.

It will teach grammar and syntax, BUT NOT vocabulary and memorizing the forms so that you can sight read a Greek or Hebrew bible. This will be a great product, but please don't think you will be able to pick up a Greek bible and read from it after watching these videos. As far as reading skills go a person who watches these vidios will no less than 3rd WEEK Greek student.

Ben, yes you can learn both through Logos books, try checking out their language areas this one is for Greek http://www.logos.com/products/groups/allitems/language-tools-greek and this one is for Hebrew http://www.logos.com/products/groups/allitems/language-tools-hebrew they are loaded with great information!

Note that it says you will cover the tools which is much different from having 3rd year level knowledge. One of my soapbox issues is the abuse of Logos to appear to have language knowledge one does not have. Logos is very good at providing the tools one can use to understand debates over meaning in commentaries. It is very good at providing tools to help someone weak in the original languages to muddle their way through the original languages. I wouldn't dream of teaching myself Hebrew without the Logos tools - but it still takes the equivalent of 3 years to gain 3rd year understanding.

My dream and it really is only a dream is to turn the clock back a decade [H] and then enroll in the "local" 60 mile away seminary and actually take Hebrew and Greek in a classroom setting. Two years would be enough for me. God Bless

Have you ever checked out the BiblicalGreek.org web site? It is a very impressive online course. The cost is $450 plus books, which would be a lot cheaper than a seminary. My highschool daughter, whom we are homeschoolng, is considering taking their Latin or Greek course. John D. Schwandt is the voice behind the Logos Greek audio. I really like the philosophy of internalizing the language. If you never get past the "translation mode" it will be a struggle to keep up with you Greek and Hebrew. Absolutely right! The trouble with appearing to be familiar with the original languages is that people can use what they read about to pass on information about the text, but if there is any further follow-up questions, say in a Bible study, then their limitations are exposed. It's also why I'm a bit leery of interlinears. There's nothing like wresting the meaning from the text. It's my idea of joy. I've just spent a couple of days poring over the meaning of the Greek Mark 1:17. What a lovely way to spend the last days of my holiday!
