Why are some functions requiring 3rd party cookies?

I've run into several areas that require third party cookies here on some of the Faithlife/Logos website(s), pages, etc.
I am curious why this site (in particular) would require third party cookies at all. I can see first party, but, to me, I have never trusted even those; but, never ever third party or worse, flash cookies.

I suspect that the session cookie resides on faithlife.com or auth.faithlife.com, which is technically a third party cookie.

I allow "visited" third party cookies in Firefox, which are from places I've previously visited; so I have had no issues with Faithlife-related ones. If a website insists I accept third party cookies I need to know why e.g. to perform a booking via a third party.
