IPAD Question: Reading books on the IPad.
Main question: Will the Ipad do what I want? I want to read, read, read. I use the computer to search, study, and research.
(1) There are TONS of books in my logos4 library that I want to read just for enjoyment. Devotionals, administration, preaching, etc. Just your basic fun-reads... books on leadership and so forth. HOWEVER, it is a strain on my body to sit and read on my desktop and laptop. I am in love with the idea of having these books (with the reading plan schedule) on an ipad just to hold or keep in my lap and read. The price of the ipad and the convenience of many titles in one hand seems to be much more cost effective.
(2) The MAIN thing I want to be able to do is to bring up (open up) my books instantly on the ipad and read them without having to be connected to the logos server. Once I have the book(s) on the ipad would I still have to connect to the server or can I just read them offline. I just want to increase my free-reading time and would do that at home in the recliner or in the bed. That's the only strong attraction to the Ipad for me...
So... is it doable? Will the Ipad do for me what I want the most??
Please give honest answers ) Your answers determine how much further I go with this pursuit.

You can read them offline once you download them from the library.

Thanks, Kevin. Your answer was short so I went to your site... wow... you - are - the - man! Your site is packed with all kinds of good stuff (even the video of the case for the ipad). I especially caught the comment about how you preach with it. I even have plans to try it out in the pulpit. Tell me (short answer will do) if you use a notebook program for your notes while preaching, what is it? You made mention of "Pages". what about MS Word documents? I believe your site just sold me on buying the ipad for what I want to do with it.
Thanks for your input.

Dave,
I have an ipod and use it extensively for reading logos materials. It's great (and an ipad would be even better, I imagine!). Check out the list of resources that are currently available for the ipod/phone/pad:
http://www.logos.com/iphone/support/resourcelist
Currently there are about 4000 available, and they continue to add more as they get permission, but not everything is available yet. It's important to know that before you buy [:)]

The easiest way that I have found to deterimine how many of your resources are available on the Ipod/Ipad is to go to http://library.logos.com/?beta=true
click on the library, and put your cursor in the filter box. It will tell you the count. Mine is 979.

Now *that's* what I'm talking about. I spent too much time looking for that list before asking around. I "tested" it and the first 12 books that are on my "want to read" list were all there. That pretty much settled it. I also found three of the commentaries (series) that I reach for first. I do believe the ipad will do much more than what I initially want it to do.
Thanks a WHOLE lot.

This is very helpful! I've got 919 listed here. Thanks, man.
(I've bookmarked all these suggested pages.)

Hey, (all ipadians and those who are techo-wise)...
Another question you might be able to answer for me. I know I am to buy as much as I can afford as far as memory, but with the platinum library of logos4, will the 16gig ipad be plenty for that or should I consider 32 or even the 64 gig ipad? I am not familiar as to how much memory these titles take up.
Thanks for any input.

As already mentioned, downloading titles is strictly optional. You could get by with only the 16.
Having said that, the 32 GB iPad seems to be the sweet spot for lots of people using their iPads for all kinds of reasons. Mine is not yet half filled, and I have all kinds of stuff on it and have been teaching from it. I struggled earlier this year with whether to get the 64 or 32 and opted to get the 32 as the 64 may have been overkill. Ask me again in six months, but I think I made the right decision.

I am using pages for sermon notes and in midweek study when I run my own PowerPoint I'm using keynote with a projector and the VGA adapter.
I wish there was an app that would display bible text and notes side by side in split screen.
And thanks for the kudos about my site.Dr. Kevin Purcell, Director of Missions

David, I have a 32 gig Iphone. I have not only my L4 on it, but some movies for traveling, some podcasts for training, some music, many apps, well you get the idea here. My point is, that for L4 alone, 8 gig would be enough, but you will put many other things on Ipad... so how much other stuff will you put on it... and you will put other things on it. To help you in your ministry, to help you witness, to help you travel. I had a 32gig Itouch first, and would have bought a 64 gig Iphone if it were available, but since it was not, I went with the 32 gig. the future is a long way off, and you never know what other exciting stuff will come out for the Ipad that you might need some room for... I would suggest a minimum of 32 and 64 gig if the dollars are there.
hope that this helps,

I am hoping for some clarification. Perhaps it has been said, and I just missed it, but the app for the iPad is not really L4, but the iPhone version, right?
I am wondering about the linking Bible and commentary and some other things, as well as the highlighting and notes.

Considering its size and weight, is reading from the IPad any more unwieldy than reading from your typical hardback book?
0 -
It's about the same weight as a hardback book. I read from it in bed nearly every night.

Thanks, Rick. That's what I would do to.
P.S. Like your blog!

Dan, you are correct, only the Iphone version is on your phone and not L4... of all of my things on my Iphone... and I have about 30 books downloaded at this point and would only expect to add another 15 at most when they become availabe, but right now, I am using 982.2 meg of space for Logos, so Logos is not a hog in any way. As for Linking bibles, I don't see how that can be done at this point. and I don't use notes in logos and notes are not currently supported so I cant help you with that one! Sorry about that.

Depends on the book, but I don't find it a problem. I have a Kindle and it is heavier than that, but lighter than many commentaries.
