MM and sets already included in packages

Any clever ideas of how to figure out whether I am getting better value buying a set through MM that is also included in a base package?

For example, I could get the AYBC for $901.92 - that's about $11.71 for each of the 77 volumes I don't yet have. The AYBC is already included in the Collector's Edition package - which for me is still a steep $7,185.27.

I'm just trying to figure out whether I would be better off continuing to save for the base package or if the AYBC is discounted enough in this sale to make it worthwhile as a separate purpose.

Any ideas?

It's also in Lutheran Portfolio, which includes the ICC. I got that package last year and both sets are worth it in my opinion.

Yes, I intend to get both sets eventually. I agree that they are worth it, but just trying to figure out the best way to obtain them.

Maybe Lutheran Portfolio is a good option for you?

Generally you will get a better deal buying a commentary set as part of a base package than as a set on its own as part of a sale.

The other thing to consider is that when Logos 8 is released, expected to be sometime this year, book collections are revised and commentary sets can be swapped in and out of these collections so AYBC may or may not be in these collections post Logos 8 release of it could be in a totally different collection.

The best way is to visit the commentary set product page. Then, at at the top of the right-hand column, look for the the heading "Recommendations". If it says "This title is included as a part of the following collections", then you'll be able to compare the price of that collection with the cost of buying just the commentary set.

It's not perfect, because it only works if the base package has the entire contents of the commentary set. If (as a fictional example), the base package contains 19 out of the 20 volumes, it won't be listed. This can happen if the commentary set has been updated since the base packages were launched. Pillar is an example of this.

If you want to be more thorough, visit this base package comparison page, and use CTRL+F to try and find the commentary sets you're interested in. That will at least help you narrow down which commentary sets are in any base package, and which 'families' to look at. It will tell you, for example, that Pillar can be found in both the standard and Reformed base package lines, even though they don't appear in the "Recommendations" column.

In addition to what others have said, you would also need to consider your level of need/interest/want for the other resources in the base package. No matter how much discount you get on the commentary set, it is not a good buy if the other resources in the base package are nothing more than filler for you.

In evaluating purchase of a package, I add up the non-package price of the resources i would actually use—or want to the point of lust [:P]. If that comes to more than the price of the package, then I pull the trigger.

I tend to think that deeply discounted products offer advantageous dynamic pricing on larger packages in which they are included but I don't know that for a fact and it could vary depending on the depth of the discount and the relative value of the set in the larger package's pricing.

What I would do in your situation is:

(1) Write down the price of the larger package.

(2) Buy the deeply discounted commentary set and then check whether the dynamic pricing discount it produces on the larger set is advantageous.

(3) If yes, keep. If no, use the return policy to return the commentary set.

Here is an example of why you might want to check out the packages before you click through the purchasing of a commentary set. Your millage will vary depending on what you own and if you are Logos Now member.

I had an interest in The IVP New Testament Commentary Series (IVPNTC) (20 vols.) and I have a price of $160. Also I have been thinking of the Two Horizons Commentary (10 vols.) and I have a price of $114. And I was thinking of the Interpretation: A Bible Commentary for Teaching and Preaching (INT) (43 vols.) and my price is $467. These three add up to $741.

All of these are included in the Methodist and Wesleyan Gold package which is an upgrade for me. I can get that package for $523. Also included in the package is Black's New Testament Commentary (BNTC) (13 vols.) which is $150. And various other resources. Not sure that I need to take advantage of the sale as I could wait for the upgrade to Logos 8 and assume that these resources were to stay in the package. Anyways it pays to check to see how your desired sets show up in the various packages and see the price differences.

That is a pretty big assumption. FL has a vested interest in changing the packages, else there would be no reason to buy a new package.

Totally agree I would not assume the Logos 8 base packages will be the same. FL want all those who bought a base package last time to have a reason to purchase again by offering them something different. And publishers might also withdraw support to include a commentary set in a base package at a steep discount when a new version comes around.

By way of example for grins this March, tried estimating bundle dynamic pricing discount, along with comparing results. Your mileage may vary (ymmv) since dynamic pricing algorithm has nuanced complexities (unknown to this user).

Two March Madness commentaries => Berit Olam: Studies in Hebrew Narrative & Poetry (13 vols.) and => Sacra Pagina New Testament Commentary Series are in bundle => The Liturgical Press Academic Bundle that has dynamic price discount for 10 % ownership. Dividing "Your exclusive price" of $ 1,516.89 by "Total value if sold separately" of $ 2,468.84 shows bundle discount estimate ~ 38.6 % (1 - 1516.89/2468.84) so March Madness discounts appear better so bundle price should drop more than purchase.

Berit Olam regular price is $ 359.99 so guessing $ 221.18 of the bundle price ($ 359.99 * $ 1,516.89 / $ 2,468.84) so purchasing complete set for $ 197.99 could reduce bundle to $ 1,295.71 ($ 1,516.89 - $ 221.18).

Sacra Pagina regular price is $ 379.99 with rough estimate of $ 233.47 in bundle ( $ 379.99 * $ 1,516.89 / $ 2,468.84) so dynamic price purchase of $ 206.02 to complete set could have similar bundle reduction.

Bundle dynamic price after Berit Olam purchase (MM 45 % off) became $ 1,290.86 for a reduction of $ 226.03 (more than MM $ 197.99 purchase)

Cart showed March Madness 40 % off for Sacra Pagina with $ 206.02 being 60 % of $ 343.36 (reflecting regular price reduction from owning two volumes) with purchase changing bundle to $ 1,071.14 for a reduction of $ 219.72

If you purchase a small set at a large discount, it can lower the dynamic price of a larger set by more than the sale amount. But that math works out like this:

The Liturgical Press Academic Bundle's (which costs $2,099.99) is made up of resources that are worth $2,996.33 (look at it's page when you're not logged in to see this figure). The Sacra Pagina volumes contribute $487.82 to that value, which is 16.28%. That means that if you owned Sacra Pagina you'd get (roughly) 16.28% off the price of $2,099.99, or a reduction of $341.89. So, if you wanted the Academic Bundle, it's worth buying the Sacra Pagina series first, when it is discounted at less than $341.89.

It's only 10% off because Base Packages, on average, offer around a 90% saving (the actual values range between 85% and 92% from memory, but it seems that Faithlife aim for 90%).

Because I can't think of an item discounted by more than 90% I can't think of an occasion when a sale item will reduce a base package by more than you paid for it. Sometimes, though, buying smaller base packages can make larger base packages cheaper by a disproportionate amount. There's an example here.

This is what I actually learned about Logos. The more you own, the more affordable are base packages. The best deals I got are through base packages. I can buy much cheaper commentaries through base package than to buy a commentary alone, plus additional books which I might never use. Those additional books are great benefit for me to swallow another package. Logos is like a snowball, the more you have, the more deals you can get

Thanks everyone for the advice. It sounds like I'm better leaving the commentary sets which are already in a base package for another purpose. I'm leaning towards spending on a set(s) that isn't already part of a package.
