I have downloaded Alpha 18, but each time I open logos 4 the little blue icon appears for about 15 sec. and a flash message says it is downloading xxx mb of material but then the icon disappears and I have no idea if it is downloading or not.

It tends to do that - I think it just wants to check in.
Monday brings Alpha 19 - I'd wait until you get that and see if anything changes.

With logging enabled, can see download messages in log files. Forum http://community.logos.com/forums/t/6731.aspx has logging tutorial. Also, Apple's Activity Monitor utility can show network activity. Likewise hovering mouse over blue logos icon in menu bar shows updated progress message.
