What is up with all the Ad posts?

Do these people who post ads on this forum own Logos software? If not, how can someone post on here? Maybe that should be changed to keep all the advertising from occurring.

It is spam. Unfortunately when you have an "open forum," it is difficult to keep the spammers out. FL has an automated system to keep it out... and by percentage it works "well"... but it is still annoying when it gets through.

It is interesting that it's gotten through with so much more prevalence lately. Though it works out in the end because I finally found my source for a much needed water nipple for sows. Didn't even have to look any further than my local Bible program forum, how convenient!
I wonder if there would be a way to add a status flag for actual users of Faithlife products that we could filter by. I know MVPs wouldn't want to have that filter turned on, but it would entirely eliminate the spam for the normal user.

I agree. Seems to be increasing. Maybe it should not be an Open forum, but closed to owners of the software.

They won't want to do that because the forums can be a great place for prospective users to learn about the software before they buy it. But perhaps they can keep one subforum open for just that purpose and keep the rest of them locked down, or something along those lines.

Sometimes you have people access the forum who do not yet own Logos, but who are interested in becoming owners. We don't want to exclude them. No matter how well you program a SPAM filter, spammers will finds ways to circumvent it.

Agreed. I joined Logos after browsing through a couple of forums (including this one).
On the other hand, as I've mentioned in a couple of posts now, the bigger problem is that the spam posts are indexed into the search results. So while the post is deleted, its ghost is immortalised within the search feature.
Look what searching for (John) Piper brought me:

Yes, but... The search feature of the forums has never been the best way to find anything. I never use it anymore. My suggestion: Do a google search with the syntax: site:community.logos.com piper (where "piper" is the search term you are looking for).

[Y] Google results are much better! But even then, the occasional ad slips in... I searched for "pipe":

As I said in the other thread about this, all FL have to do is to switch to a more secure forum software, and they can keep out the spam bots completely without closing the forums off and making them private.
This forum uses PHBB forum software which is notorious for having among the worst security features. Spam bots can easily circumvent it. Other forum software solutions such as Simple Machines or vBullitin forum software are among the best for security features. The spam bots wont get past them. At all. Ever!
As far as keeping the forums open, that is highly desirable. Every search engine has a bot which comes to chat rooms like this and they harvest data from all the threads made. This is called metadata. That data then shows up when you google a subject. This has been scientifically proven to aid sales if the chat room is a commercial enterprise. So, closing off the forums and making them private is not a good idea.
In the end, it is up to FL to make the move to better software and not inconvenience us users any more with the spam bots.
