Underlines in my resources

I apologize in advance.  I'm sure that there are posts related to this, but I do not know what it is called to be able to search for it.  Many of my resources have selections underlined with a pencil icon following.  I'm sure that this is some sort of community sharing of notes or passages that others have found helpful.  Usually, however, I find these underlines distracting.  I would like to turn them off.  Is there a way to do that?

Also, am I sharing my highlights and notes with the community?  I'm not sure that I want to do that.  Not that I want to be selfish, but some of the notes I make are private and personal, and I don't want them to be public.  How can I know if I am sharing my highlights and notes publicly?

    Yes it is a community sharing of highlights - and is called Popular Highlights.

    You can turn it off for a resource - or for all resources - by finding a resource which is showing them, clicking the visual filter menu icon, and finding the "Popular Highlights" options in the Resources section. As you can see for the screenshot.you can enable / disable it for the resource or - from the drop-down menu, enable / disable it for all resources

    Your notes are not shared unless you deliberately create a community note.

    Your highlights are not shared but are aggregated and anonymised with highlights made by others and when enough users have highlighted a passage it appears as a Popular Highlight to those who have it enabled.
