Logos 4 performance questions

I'm trying to use L4 every day. I like the new layout for reading and highlighting, but I've run into several problems:

(Using an HP Pavilion 2GB ram 100GB HDD, dual core Pentium, running Windows XP SP3)

1. It crashes on start-up once-in-a-while ( perhapse 3x in 2 weeks) - this hasn't been a show-stopper, just worrisome.

2. I did a Bible search for "sons of God" in NASB95 New Testament and got zero hits. Tried it multiple times with same result. Logos 3 had several hits for the same search. On the other hand I did a topic search of the phrase in L3 and didn't get a hit in my Baker Bible dictionary, but L4 did.

3. All of a sudden L4 wants to take 3.5 hours to re-index. I did a HDD defrag just before starting L4 and having it tell me it that. Could the defrag cause a re-indexing?

4. When it indexes it sucks up ALL my CPU time. Isn't this a mistaken priority setting for Logos?

Enable permanent logging Diagnostic Logging and upload logs Uploading Logs when it crashes.

Ensure your search term includes the quotes and that Search settings are like below:-

No. How did L4 "tell" you about re-indexing?

With a Pentium dual-core not being a top performer compared to Core 2 Duo it will have that effect. I just let my laptop index whilst I do something else. It is set to run in the background with low priority which means you could perform another task.

I had tried the search with and without the quotes

Today I fired up L4 and redid the search ( "sons of God" ) before changing any settings. To my surprise I got the 5 hits I expected from my L3 search. The worrisome thing is that I didn't do anything different[:|] (I'd say I swear to it, but I've been teaching Matthew and it says to let my yes be yes and no, no.) I appreciate your reminder about the search settings I had forgotten about (they were set to default settings all times I did the search).

It tells me it's re-indexing when I hover over the Logos icon in the system tray.

I did a check on my CPU model number and it turns out to be a core duo. (T5500
1.66GHZ)

This will not answer your question but I think it is related. Over the last week, my L4 goes through indexing every time I boot up. I 'hid' several resources, does this cause to re-index everytime? It really does slow things down.

L4 may call the Indexer when it starts but it usually takes a few seconds to update some databases. When you hide resources a similar update occurs and it can take more time (it also removes the resources). Your resources will not be automatically re-indexed without a previous download. If it was interrupted in some way (by logging off the computer) it will resume automatically.

If you really want to know what is going on then you will have to upload some logs - see Diagnostic Logging

This was happening regularly in 4.0b and throughout the 4.0c Beta cycle through Beta 7. I do not know if it was divine intervention because I'm living right or something else, but the attempt to run indexing at start up seems to have stopped in 4.0c RC1.

I think it is an integrity check for possible corruption of the index. I had it occur 5 times in a row but infrequently since then.

Sorry Fred, I was looking for the logical answer and missed the obvious[:)]

It worked great

I'm glad the Quick Method worked. I'm about to use it again now that 4.0c is coming out of beta.
