Beta 3 Install Crash
Beta 3 download updates and appeared to install fine but crashed just before Logos 4 program started up....
Error report was submitted to microsoft.
Logs: 6761.Logos4.zip
Logos 4 then started up. About Dialog shows up as b3..but no re-indexing fo resources has take place...surely can't be that optimized... I installed Ariel Genesis commentary in L3 just before starting this updated and forced a sync license so should be seeing indexing but not at this point... Ariel Commentary not showing up in L4 at this point....its now showing more updates are being download in system tray icon....
At this point CPU usage very acceptable but no indexing has taken place yet so will keep an eye on that if/when indexing starts up....
One more point...L4 keeps switching between status of items waiting to be sync''ed and sync is in progress.

Contiuing on from here...did another download and update...but boom crash again... as above...
Logs: 7485.Logos4.zip
Something I picked up in indexer log this time around was that it was looking at resource on my j drive...this path was secondary path in L3 setup, with primary being the default on c drive.. This secondary path contained things like lsf files and old lbxlls files....I was under impression L4 would only search the first listed path in L3....seems that is not the case..... so I have removed this secondary path, along with the tertiary path from L3 setup shut that down and restarted it for good measure... and have re-started L4.. its now at stage 1 of preparing library ...lets hop its attempt 3 will get b3 up and running.....

It seems like the problematic resources are:

Hi George, things working better now I took that j drive path out of L3 resources path.. .however the indexing still has not finished... its on stage 3 of compacting the indexes been at it for a while now...any hour soon I hope it will complete...will post back when completed .... till then I've uploaded the files you requested....looks like an old LL2 style overview guide, the predecessors of company homepages in L3... i can't actually get this to come up in L3 but it looks like its from a collection put out by IVP Uk given the name - maybe the orginal IVP Essential Bible Reference Library which has gone through a couple of revisions - but thats just a guess as I think this may of come out in LL2 days but such a long time ago I can't be sure.... anyway you have the files now that you can look at and see if this file is worth doing anything with ... I haven't got an install on hand of LL2 right now and don't want to do that while L4 is still re-indexing ... maybe I'll do that on a virtual machine later today once b3 is finally installed.....

Well it stil hasn't completed... still showing up as
The other thing is that the application itself seems to be continually switching between these two states:
Is this to be expected during compacting of indexes ?
Looking at indexer log file stage 2 seem to compete at 7:53 am this morning. Since that point all that is getting written to this log coninuously is and info message about the program setting status to indexing library... that's about 2 1/2 hours or writing the same messge to log:I tried opening up my library to look for Ariel resource ...it is now there....also tried opening search window and status message about library being indexed shows.
Updated Logs:
Note during the last 2/12 hours CPU usage has been fine and logo indexer user has been varying....

Compacting the index on my netbook took 3 hours and 58 minutes with nothing else happening.
Compacting the index on my notebook while other stuff was happening took 2 1/2 hours.
I have no idea what different factors influence this time.
They do need to change the tooltip for this stage. Numerous people have asked what the program is doing at this stage. A number of us thought that the program was hung and turned off the machine only to have it begin again from the very beginning.

Ok.. didn't have to find out... indexer has now stopped of its own accord...difficult to tell if the application trying to continually snyc was locking stopping the indexer from finishing or this is just one of those co-incidences... latest logs attached for you to investiage if there is any indication of this scenario...

App hung on me second time I tried starting it... so I killed it and then it seem to starup itself as login screen came up... now appear to be running on beta 3 finally......have run a couple of basic searches and opened a reading list and clicked on some links...but stll seem to be getting this constant sync of items... is this normal behaviour ... there is something in the logs about a failure due to a custom guide....

Hi, 3 instances of Logos4.exe running is not expected behavior, I've noticed that once after installing the new beta. Just end all instances (you may leave the indexer) and try launching again. Let me know if you can get started using B3

George. I found two issues that were causing me grief.
1. L4 is now scanning directories outside of L3 default c drive. see post here
2. Problem with file for new dictionary of theolgoy see post here and resource file megauploaded here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3J9GQ26A
I'm now finally in stage 2 of indexing hopefully that will finishi some time in next 8 hours....

This hope has proven to be sadly misplaced!!!! I had around 620 resources left to index. I thought I would open up L4 and do some reading... this is what we are suppossed to be able to do right ? work with the program whiles its indexing ? Well up came the preparing library screen and now i am back and indexing with 4,237 resources to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! So now I am going to be going into my third day straight of trying to get this program back up and running after the licensing server muck up... and probably just after I get it up an running you will release b4 and I will be back indexing again for who knows how long.

I noticed the following in error in the indexer log. What exactly is a catastrophic failure... its seems quite a colourful description!

This is just Windows being overly dramatic. Our code is issuing the numeric error code 0x8000FFFF (aka "E_UNEXPECTED") which just means that an unexpected error occured. During the logging, we call a Windows method (FormatMessage) to translate numeric error codes into English descriptions. (This method is generally useful to turn numeric errors, e.g., 0x8007000E (E_OUTOFMEMORY) into human-readable messages, e.g., "Out of memory".) For whatever reason, the English description of the E_UNEXPECTED error is "Catastrophic failure". So it sounds a lot more serious than it really is.

Thanks Bradley for the explanation, it did read a bit overly dramatic hence my question.
