but, there are other people named Mary. (Mary and Martha, for instance). How do I narrow this search?

I don't think you can.
In Bibles - or other appropriately tagged books - you could use <Person Mary (mother of Jesus)> but this doesn't work across all the other books in your library.
One search idea is:
Mary NEAR mother WITHIN 14 WORDS (normal,ordinary)
