I'm considering the purchase of Walton's book "Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament" https://www.logos.com/product/6046/ancient-near-eastern-thought-and-the-old-testament but am wondering if there is a lot of overlap with the material in it and the material in either of the following books he has also written and which are more recent.
"Old Testament Theology for Christians: From Ancient Context to Enduring Belief"
https://www.logos.com/product/148376/old-testament-theology-for-christians-from-ancient-context-to-enduring-belief
"The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate"
https://www.logos.com/product/52907/the-lost-world-of-genesis-one-ancient-cosmology-and-the-origins-debate
Can anyone speak to the issue of content overlap?
If you value Walton’s Insights I think you would find it very helpful. I would see it as very much complementing the other two books. There will be overlap, but in reality whenever ANE cultural elements are referenced in the later two books, you would probably find the largest and deepest treatment in “ANE Thought and the OT.”
You may be interested to know that Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament has a second edition that was published in May 2018. The only one in Logos is the first edition. No pre-pub yet. I don't have the second edition so I can't speak to its changes, just know that it is out there.
In terms of overlap, there is some in the Lost World of Genesis 1 and ANE Thought. ANE Thought is more academic and Lost World is a shorter, simpler, yet focused version of parts of ANE Thought.
Thank you Paul and Anthony.
It sounds like I would find some added value in ANE Thought and the OT so will plan on getting that. I wasn't aware of the 2nd edition though so I'll see if I can learn anything about the changes. If they seem at all substantial I'll probably hold off and see if Logos picks it up.
Thanks again, guys. Much appreciated.
Rick,
The 2nd edition is on pre-pub now.

I pre-ordered the second edition since I’m going to be busy reading his other books for now. Maybe if we get a Christmas coupon I can buy his old testament survey book 👍😁👌
DAL
Thanks again!!! [:)]
I wish there were a discount on the second edition for those of us who own the first
I agree it would be nice but is doesn’t happen with print so can’t expect it for ebooks.
