Android Editing Deletes Note - How to Recover

I was in my study group tonight and noticed that I typed something wrong in my lesson (on my laptop) during the week.

I clicked to edit the document and then saved it and the entire document text disappeared and was replaced with a little pencil icon and "Make a Note". The document still exists with the title, but everything I wrote in the lesson is completely gone!

I spent hours during the last week answering those questions. When I got home, I hoped to find some way to recover the document on my laptop, but of course, it's all gone there, too.

I don't know how it's possible that an entire document can be erased just by editing one word! Please tell me I can get all that work back - there must be some way to retrieve it.
