Hastings in Community Pricing

I just found numerous offerings of J. Hastings (more than I new existed!) and I am thrilled. I would hope everyone who reads this post would sign on for the max bid for each item...his stuff has always impressed me. CP is the perfect place to list his stuff...I think I may have even made this suggestion a few months back.

One thing: the main item I am most interested in getting my hands on WASN'T LISTED--his Encyclopedia of Religion--the depth and breadth of that collection blew me away years ago when I used the resource in college. I've never seen its rival--it reminds me a bit of ICC or Word...heavy in original languages. It was offered as a PrePub almost a decade ago if I remember correctly--one of the first, but didn't go anywhere, which shocked me. It was eventually withdrawn. Perhaps because it covers religions other than Christianity? DON'T LET THAT HINDER YOU. Hasting's Encyclopedia has tons of worthy material in it. I'd trade HALOT for it...I can't believe I ever wanted that paperweight.

Please add the Encyclopedia...please, please.

Please bid high on all of Hasting's offerings...please, please.

Well, slow and steady wins the race, I suppose. We finally have one of the Hastings CP items that have crossed the threshold! This item is a gimme at the current price, so everyone should jump on board--and the price will go even lower!

In case you aren't familiar with Hastings, his dictionaries and encyclopedia are high quality resources with tremendous depth and breadth. Here are just some of the current Logos resources that quote Hastings:

Every one of the Hastings offerings in CP is high quality and worthy of inclusion in your library. To have a chance to get these resources at the gimme prices of CP is a tremendous opportunity that should not be passed up. Get your bid in for GMWB and while you're at it, bid on all of the Hastings resources, if you haven't already.

Btw, the Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics is in PrePub right now. The price is a screaming steal. It will take months for it to roll off the line, so go ahead and put your order in now. It is one of the most impressive resources I have ever used. The detail and breadth of information is fascinating. I said in my OP that I would trade HALOT for it--I take that back. I would trade HALOT and BGAD for it. It's that good.

This strategy could backfire in certain cases of obscure titles where there really isn't going to be much demand for it right now (perhaps there would be if the entire Logos user base knew about it but it's hard to reach everyone who might potentially buy it). We could end up forcing something to get to 100% sooner at a higher price than if we'd just been willing to wait for more Logos users to see the offer over time. Probably the vast majority of Logos users don't check the forums every week even. So if we rush something through by all bidding at the highest possible price, it could go over the top and not many others jump in over the following week because they simply haven't seen the offer yet, and then we get stuck with the higher price. I still think I'd prefer not to ever bid higher than a price at which I'd say "if it ended up going for any higher than this, I'd pull out."

[Y] My thoughts exactly Rosie. I love CP and the bargains it offers, but I'm not going to bid more than I'm willing to pay. Patience almost always pays off with a better price by allowing the Logos "market" to work so to say. "Forcing it through faster" by having a much smaller number of people bid very high would get it into publication faster, but likely at a higher price unless there was a huge rush of orders in the last week...which doesn't seem nearly as likely when something has gone over the line for $60 instead of $15.

It seems that the typical pattern of CP titles is that there is not a lot of activity and posting until it reaches 80%. After it reaches that level, people seem ready to commit at a price that they realize is a bargain.

Barnes has been at 60% or lower forever. Unless a number of people are willing to pay more than $30, I doubt that it will ever reach production.

It's just about to clear the 60% line for the first time which is cool. The trouble with Barnes is that it is 10,000+ pages. I suspect that it will take a lot of bidders to get it done regardless of what price.

Even if that's true, that's not the same as saying that bidding higher will get you a lower price. If we were able to get enough people to bid $90 to get Barnes to go over the line, it would probably go for $90, not lower because even most of the people that want it aren't willing to pay that price. It might go for $80 or $85 at best. In contrast, it may take another year or more to get it over the line at $30 or $35, but at that point would probably go for $25 or $30 or less once it got over because more people would see $30 as a bargain than $90.
