Louw-Nida: expanded applcations - 2 ideas

What a great resource. What incredible potential for fleshing out a passage. How about:

1] Applying these domains to the entire Old Testament? (Maybe a few others might be needed to accommodate Hebrew thought)

2] Writing an app that would comb a passage [within User defined limits] to gather all LN categories of that passage into groups - ordered by frequency. In this way not merely word frequency but even synonyms would be categorized. When looking at the list of categories, you could see which ones dominate any given passage. It would also help preachers/teachers to see things in the passage that they might otherwise miss.

Think of the possibilities. [Someone is eventually going to do this - might as well be LOGOS - which is my preference anyway]

Thanks George. I have these but never realized their value. They do refer to the LN categories. The entries are alphabetical rather than by domain. I like being able to browse categories like in LN. And I don't think each listing gives all the other words in that particular semantic domain - only LN numbers for that lemma. Also, if you hoover your mouse over the LN numbers, it links to Greek parallels, so the work does not truly stand on its own yet. I am thinking of all similar Hebrew words being ordered under the LN categories where they belong in the way the Greek words in the NT are arranged in LN. Maybe I need to take a closer look, but I don't think that this fully captures the essence of my idea. I'll need to spend more time looking into it.

My focus though is on the second suggestion. The first was kind of a means to an end. Being able to run a filter over a selected passage and have the LN domains listed (by domain) with the number of hits - in order of frequency [but only drawing from the selected passage] would open up a quicker set of insights into a passage than ever before.

ie- for Gen 1 it might look something lke this (this is all made up off the top of my head, but it gives an idea of the type of report that might be generated):

Time LN# xxx 20 hits beginning, day (8), evening (7), morning (7), etc.

Plant life LN# xxx 16 hits trees (2), herbs (1), etc

animal LN# xxx 14 hits: creeping things, beasts of the field (1), fish of the deep (1), etc

- Of course you would have links to every verse where one or more of these words occur

I had a passage open with the Hebrew word מִסְפָּר occuring so I right-clicked and chose DBL Hebrew (I don't have that set up as my preferred lexicon). I there found the domain number "LN 60.1-60.9" so I ran a search for "LN 60.1" in DBL Hebrew and came up with 21 hits. I know that it's a kludge, but it does work.

Thanks George. Yes, I have been looking more at this resource and it is pretty amazing.

I did a BASIC search [using DBL as the place to search] and typed in "LN 20.31" (with the quotes)and got 153 hits in 145 articles. Very interesting.

BTW - "kludge" didn't turn up any results [:)]

NIDOTTE has a section with semantic domains for the OT.

If you are interested in the correspondence between NT and OT words, a Bible Word Study from a Greek lemma will show you what Hebrew words this Greek word translates in the Septuagint.

This is the project that plans on being somewhat of a parallel to L&N. Its not complete, but will definitely seek to make up for L&N's short comings. Once its complete, hopefully we'll see it in Logos.

This is the project that plans on being somewhat of a parallel to L&N. Its not complete, but will definitely seek to make up for L&N's short comings. Once its complete, hopefully we'll see it in Logos.

It might be time to bump this old forum topic ... maybe we could get an experimental version? It would seem to me that since it's already digital the conversion $$$ overhead might be less. Maybe a prepub experimental version?
