Commentary videos?

Hey all,

So my Father who by the grace of God is finally getting interested in understanding his faith. He is a baby Christian and has not read a book in probably his whole life. Whats awesome is he has been sharing how he wants to start to learn but reading commentaries is to hard and to much work. So he asked me if I know any Commentaries that are done DVD style. Almost like someone teaching him through a video on a book of the bible. I have no idea of any and Im seeing if anyone has any suggestions or ideas. Thanks!

FL offers Mobile Ed Courses, which have a professor teaching on some aspect of the Christian faith, including teaching through books of the Bible. There are also other videos offered, like John Piper's, Look at the Book, that might be interesting.

The animation style might feel patronising so you might want to give it a look for yourself first, but the bible project (on youtube & Faithlife TV) offers 5-10 minute overviews of every book of the bible and content-wise it's pretty phenomenal what they can do in that time.

The only thing I can think of that's like a video commentary would be mobile-ed courses/lectures, but that might be too bookish for a new Christian who's not big on reading. There are obviously a lot of great sermon series available on video, but that might be more specific to your church tradition? I lean toward Gospel Coalition-y stuff (and they have a good set of resources for my taste, including video lecture series), but if you're not into popular reformed theology that's not going to be your bag.

I have a lot of mobile Ed courses but I agree with James I think in his case even though they pull the books and the areas to read it will not be what hes looking for or find it to much. Its hard because to be honest most of everything is reading but I know hes specifically wanting commentary on a book through a video. The hard part with sermons is even exegetical preaching can tend to not go as deep in study but there are great ones out there. Also hes old school assemblies of God and im more reformed baptist. So who I would like to show him is not really on his full doctrinal beliefs.

I started a Mobile Ed course last night. When I got to the reading, I typed CTRL-<R> and my Windows platform read the text to me while I followed along. Text-to-speech in Windows really improved with the advent of Windows 8. One has to be careful that the speech engine reads beyond the end of the excerpt suggested by the course. So when the excerpt is from a dictionary, the automated reader will continue on with the next article. This is easy to stop and doesnt' seem to have any ill effects.

They offer roughly ten-minute overviews of every Bible book, and much more besides – to an extremely high standard, and they're VERY engaging.

If you want more in depth study, but with fewer visual bells and whistles, the John Piper's Look at the Book is ideal, as others have said.

I concur that Bible Project is a great starting point for a Bible Survey type video resource.

Another great resource in LOGOS is Colin Smith's Unlocking the Bible. His website has audio, video and print of preaching the sermons that made up these 4 volumes. If one bought the 4 volumes then did a search on the website for the chapter titles, one would find the audio/video resources that coincide with the print volumes.
