Helping a friend learn Logos

I am looking for help with my Library on a mentoring project.

I am a long time Logos user but am only at a medium level of experience. I am a lay person in the United Methodist Church and am working with a new Pastor visiting in the USA from Liberia, Africa. He is a new Logos user with a Bronze level base package. I have a Portfolio level package. I would like to build some guides in several areas and some reports on several subjects and passages. I will use these to show him what Logos can do and why he needs to spend time getting up to speed. We are separated by 4 hours of driving and I only occasionally get an hour or two with him in person. Most of this will be done by email and phone.

The issue is that I think I need to tackle this project using the books and tools that my Pastor friend has available or can afford to add in the foreseeable future. I do not know how to do something like building a Collection of Bronze level books to use in this project. I also do not know how to identify what Features and Data sets a Bronze level collection has except that I do know that he has a Full Feature set.

Does anyone have any suggestions on methodology, procedures, tools, etc. that would be helpful in accomplishing my goals? I hardly know where to start.

IF you are referring to Logos 8, having gone through many of the training videos, my recommendation is to watch the Logos 8 videos, and follow along each step. This is a huge learning curve, more for some than for others.

Since I am on a limited ("Unlimited Plan"- ha) I download the videos once to conserve "time," and then can watch them over and over. If you download them, I recommend you keep the videos in separate folders to match as is done on https://faithlifetv.com/items/560891.

While it indicates "Logos Training," beware that it may not be obvious at first if a video is for Logos 7 or 8. Hopefully this will be clearly marked soon, but for now I'm sure Logos/FL has their hands full - so patience is of the essence for now! On Faithlifetv.com, when a Logos video starts, in the menu bar I look for "Documents" = Logos 7, or "Docs" = Logos 8.

If someone does not have net access, or it is very slow or limited, perhaps copying the videos to external drive for her/him would be the way to go. When I exceed my "unlimited" limit, due to choking, or throttling, it may take an hour or MORE to download a 5 minute video!

The above writing may apply to Logos 7 as well.

I am not a Logos expert, and will gladly yield to any suggestion that would be better and / or more accurate.

Charles, while you have many more resources than he does, you have the same features, so that helps.

Bronze provides him with enough resources to do almost everything you can do, but he'll have fewer results in Guides, Searches, and so on.

Therefore I would not be concerned about somehow trying to duplicate his library (you could do this by manually tagging every book in Bronze that is in your Library, but i don't think it's worth your time to do so.) If you want to acquaint him with a few of his resources, look through the Bronze on-line listing and pick out a few you think are impressive.

I'd focus mainly on function, not resources. Show him how to set up a simple layout with a linked Bible, Commentary, and Word Study Guide, and with the Highlighting and Information panels open. Make sure he sees a Passage Guide at work. Show him a Word Study. Show him how he can find a Greek or Hebrew word in whatever lexicon he has available. Show him how to search his Bible for a word using the right click menu in the Bible. Then show him how to search for a word sense or preaching theme through the right click menu.

Let him see the sermon starter guide. Show him the new workflows, especially the Expository Sermon Workflow. Let him see a few of the Interactives, and be sure he knows there is a Bible reading plan tool and a prayer list.

You don't have to go into great depth. He can check the Logos training videos for more help, but you can help him see what he's bought.

I wonder if using your 'face to face' time to instruct on the use of Logos is the most productive way of using that odd hour or so.

In your position I would sacrifice one or more of my eight hours of driving in favour of a Skype (other programs are available) meeting during which 'face to face' sessions can be alternated with screen sharing by one or the the other of you.

This method of instruction allows both of you to be comfortably behind a screen and not jockeying for space, keyboard, trackpad etc.
