    You might want to use the Highlighting tool with keyboard shortcuts. That's the most convenient way to apply particular highlight styles to text. For example, when I have text selected, pressing the y key applies a yellow highlight style.

    I think Gabe wants to have highlighting applied to his note. True, you can highlight separately, but if you want to highlight the note text when you create the note you have to select the highlighting style every time you create a note since the choice to select a default highlighting style is missing.
