Another Question About Creating Collections

I am asking for help with creating the collections shown below. Exclusions in the rules were based partially on my library contents and mostly on my lack of experience in this area. I noticed that severaI contributors are quite skilled in this area. I am hoping that one of you has both time and inclination to help with this request given my lack of knowledge and experience with creating collections.

Please note, I created these AFTER going to the wiki page and AFTER viewing the videos. I also made an attempt to browse some of the more than 6500 posts on collections. I finally took someone's advice and posted my request for help on this forum. I have listed the collections I am trying to create and the rules I used in hopes that someone will offer a better way to build this mouse trap.

Church History –

I used this rule: subject:"history" ANDNOT title:amarna, amazing, "BR", "Common Sense", atlas, Logos, map, science

Language –

I used this rule: series:Word, Pillar, Anchor, United, Hermeneia, "JPS Tanakh"

Science –

I used this rule: title:science OR subject:science

Application Commentaries –

I used this rule: type:commentary AND (title:Application OR subject:application)

Exegetical Commentaries –

I used this rule: type:commentary AND title:exeget OR subject:exeget

Apologetics – I used this rule: topic:apologetics OR subject:apologetics

you have begun well.

But beware that there are errors in the logos 4 "metadata" so you will still manually have to add or subtract some resources in order to "fine tune' your your dynamic collections.

I find title:church AND title:history to be best (you can even omit AND as space = AND in simple cases like this)

Hi Abraham:

For Apologtics, I created this rule (which gives me 31 resources):

title:(Apologetic,atheist,defend,logic) OR subject:Apologetics

If I use your rule, I get 22 resources. If I use only "topic:apologetics" I get nothing. If I use only :subject:apologetics I get 22 resources. I am not sure about the field "topic".

For science, I changed your rule to: title:science OR subject:science ANDNOT subject:political (to omit the political science resources)

For American History and Political Science I made this rule:

title:(American,constitution,declaration,federalist) ANDNOT type:(bible-commentary,Bible) ANDNOT title:"New American" OR subject:political

Because of the variety of commentaries and the variety of needs I have, I actually used MYTAGS and tagged each commentary as one of seven different types:

Academic

Expository

Expostory

Intermediate

Popular

Single Volume

Study Bibles

I created each collection using this rule: mytag:academic

You can open most of your commentaries in the Library by using this rule: type:"bible commentary" Then you can select commentaries and tag them. You can select several commentaries and tag them all at once, which makes the process go so much faster.

Hi Abraham:

One of the first collections I created was a history collection. I created this rule:

(title:history OR title:biographical OR subject:"church history" OR subject:biography) ANDNOT (title:jesus OR title:"Christ" OR title:"lord") ANDNOT title:"Bible and its" ANDNOT title:"history of the Jewish People" ANDNOT title:"History of the Doctrine"

It clearly needs to be cleaned up. And it certainly gets more than just "church history". My rule gives me 79 resources. Your rule gives me 63 resources (with about 10 or 15 I will need to weed out). To my rule, I had to manually add Luther's 95 theses; Confessions of St. Augustine, and The Councils of the Church.

When you use the comma syntax, you need to enclose the comma-separated terms in parentheses, so your Church History rule would be:

subject:history ANDNOT title:(amarna, amazing, BR, "Common Sense", atlas, Logos, map, science)

Note that you do not need to use quotation marks around single-word terms.

Another thing: ChuckForsythe mentioned using tags to create collections of different types of commentaries. This is a great idea. I do it that way myself. Morris Proctor's team has created a document listing pretty much all the commentary sets available in Logos format in four categories: Language, Scholar or Critical, Pastoral or Exegetical, and Application or Devotional. I've adopted these categories in my own library, and I find them helpful. You can find the document (in PDF format) here.

Nope. He seems to be a bit behind in getting Logos 4 materials out. People are waiting for him to redo the DVD version of Camp Logos for L4, and the help page on his website is still all about Libronix.

Rosie: Thanks for posting the link. I forgot to mention that I received the newsletter with that link from MP after my original post.

Martha: The last update I received of MP Seminars' Logos manuals was contained in a link from the March 2010 newsletter (4.0b). When they were in Colorado Springs on the 12th of this month (the day 4.0c was released), Morris indicated they were working on those updates and that the plan was to make them available sometime soon. As of today, I have not seen any reference to either a complete set of new manuals containing all the current updates or updated pages (as with 4.0b). My guess is, whichever form is used to make the updates available, the release date can't be too far away.
