Highlighting Palettes and Duplicate Highlighting Styles
In the past the recommended method of doing inductive Bible study highlighting was to create a separate highlighting palette for every Bible book and tie each one to a separate notebook. Now it seems that the separate notebook for each palette is no longer recommended. (I noticed all my palettes have had their affiliations with notebooks removed by the conversion from L7 to L8 and now point to "No Notebook.")
Even though the notebooks may no longer serve a useful purpose, the palettes are a way to keep the list of highlighting styles manageable for a specific book or small set of books. But I'm wondering about what happens if I duplicate a highlighting style from one palette to another. For example, I want to keep all the highlighting of the word "prayer" consistent across all books of the Bible that I study inductively. So I do the following steps.
- In the first book I study that has "prayer" as a key word, I create a "prayer" style in a palette for that book.
- When I begin study of another book that has "prayer" as a key word, I duplicate the style and get a "prayer (2)" style in the first palette.
- I move "prayer (2)" from the first palette to the second palette.
- I rename "prayer (2)" back to "prayer" in the second palette.
Can I later use the Highlighting search tool to find all the references to "prayer" that I highlighted across both books by searching for one highlighting style called "prayer," or will there be two styles that I have to search for separately?
Incidentally, has anyone suggested adding a way to do steps 2-3-4 above in a single step? I do it so much, it would be a great time saver for my study habits.

Have you considered having theme-oriented or task-oriented palettes instead? I'd highly recommend against resource (set) specific palettes.

My recommendation for this (I really think it should be the default, in order to match "new note" from the context menu) is "Most recent Notebook". This behavior is NOT what it used to be in L7. It now only assigns a Notebook IF/WHEN notes are currently filtered to a notebook. If no notebook is being displayed, the behavior is simply "no Notebook". I went through and changed all my palettes to be "Most Recent Notebook" so that IF I want my highlights (from hotkeys) in a notebook I simply display that notebook and start highlighting.

Reuben, I use the New Inductive Study Series by Precept Ministries for my inductive study guides. Each book in this series has a set of recommended key words for study, which get augmented along the way for particular chapters where a word is a key word for just a chapter or two but not throughout the whole book. What I do now is set up a new palette and populate it with the styles I want to use for the book study, based on the suggested set of key words.
How would I implement your suggestion of theme palettes or task palettes while still being able to keep a list of the key words that are relevant for a particular book? Not every word that has a style defined for it in one book is actually a key word in a different book, so I want to have a working list of key words that are relevant for the book or passage I'm in at the moment.

Sadly, the {Highlight} search has been neutered in Logos 8.

You can duplicate a palette and remove styles you don't need.
