Recapturing Old Note Titles

Hey Everyone,

I just upgraded to Logos 8 starter and am liking the new layout and the new notes, but I'm missing titles for notes. For 90% of my notes that's not a big deal, but for the other 10% I captured notes from sermons or chapels or things of that nature and titled them according to what church I was at, who was preaching, the date, etc.

Is there any way of accessing the titles from old notes so I can enter this information in the tags instead?

The only way to do this that I know of is to switch to the Old Notes System.

    Go to documents.logos.com

Then select "Notes" in the dropdown menu to see your old notes.

For me the titles are not lost but have become the first line of the note text (in bold). Is that not the case for you?

Same here, and from what I understood of the migration process, this was the intended result.

hi is it correct that switching back to the old notes system remains inneffective/unadvisable for creating new notes?

Two critical features of the notes as I use them is creating notes with titles and saving them in the favourites folder. Both of these seem to be effectively lost, still unavailable in the new system and not really usable by returning to the old system. Is this correct? If not I would love to hear as I did (!)use these features all the time

    creating notes with titles

Note titles have been removed (The values were placed as the first line during migration), and there are no current plans to bring them back as far as I know. There is a greater chance that we'll get preset text styles and hopefully, there will be a "Title" style that the first line can be set to default to.

saving them in the favourites folder.

I'm not exactly sure what your preference is, or how you used favorites in L7, but you can still use this in L8. Dragging an instance of the Notes tool to favorites simply results in a link to the tool (disregarding filters), however, if you filter to the set of notes you wish to include, then drag that tab to the shortcuts bar, you can subsequently drag that shortcut to a favorites folder.

In the screenshot below the first link ("Notes") was created by dragging the notes tab directly, while the second ("Show Notes") was created by dragging from the shortcuts bar (please note that you can delete the shortcut from the shortcuts bar without affecting the link in favorites).

Hopefully this provides the functionality you need, albeit with a bit of hassle. I do think it possible that the direct drag behavior is a bug...

Hi thanks for your reply, but it is a disaster to lose actual Note Title links to the Favourites menu for me, dare I say it a power user. I’ve spent hours and days and vacations over the years dragging links of all types of resources to my specific organisational systems for many contexts which has added enormous  functionality until now!!, Maybe I have thousands even tens of thousands of links , ( plus over 100,000 actual notes in thousands of notes files, with multiple hot links in the favourites menus.

Logos is a part of many areas of my life and if the note file titles are lost I lose so much of the organisation I’ve been building up in Logos, by faith that the program would continue (and its has been incredibly and marvelously developed, but also by faith that FUNCTIONALITY would not be lost.

Using the favourites folder with note files adds a lot, to arrange and group resources and notes into a user defined organisational systems, including multiple linking, into visual tree like systems that make sense to oneself.  Also for those like me who have been doing this for years, there is building on existing organisation.

I hope the note file titles with their direct links in logos 7 to the favourites menu in logos 7 is retained,

The loss of functionality would be huge to me, and there must be others,

and the loss of potential flexible functionality for future user defined organisational systems would be a real shame.....

    Hi Michael,

I can sympathize with the disruption in your organization and workflow. I am still working through the new notes so my suggestion may or may not be helpful in the event FL choses not to bring back titles.

I have used the search box in the facets menu rather successfully in finding titles and then selecting those notes and adding a tag or tags. Now the facets window will display notes by tag.

    Here is a screenshot:

Note the search box has marriage found my two notes with that title and I selected and in the right box added the tag.

Now going back to the facet window you can see it now displays the tags.

The search does search content and what used to be titles, so with lots of notes and content this may not be a workable solution.

We all work very differently and as such changes to some users are more disruptive than to others. I hope this idea may provide some short term assistance in hopes FL come up with a better long-term solution.

hi John thanks for your reply. Yes I have just started experimenting with the tags feature as well, i cannot say I have exhausted many possibilities the new notes system allows for linking and using things in new ways, in the future.

However  the loss of functionality of the note titles which have been previously manually linked in the users own favourites menu of logos 7 is a disaster to thousands of hours of work and organisation which I use daily and most importantly have been building on and building up over many years for use in the future.

the favourites folder menu the tree structure allows many sub folders and lots of clear visual organisation for logos, which can have many sub folders

The attached screen shot shows some notes for John 1, but the tree structure allows many sub folders and lots of clear visual organisation for logos, which can have many sub folders

Note file titles can also be helpful with user in a user content search  where note fiules with titles can display according to ones titling system ie if a careful organisation system is used with numbers or keywords and numbers etc

as a long standing power user.... I need the links I made manually by dragging in logos 7 (and before) to the favourites menu to be retained,

and it would be a great shame to lose in the future the flexibility and potential for user defined organisational systems for everyone. Has logos really explored this power user use of the favourites menu feature yet? Does logos know what it has produced and what it is throwing away?

Michael, please don't get me wrong. But after your re-do, Logos will change again? Seems like maybe a 9 year 'let's fix notes' cycle.

You MIGHT have more notes than me. But I keep mine outside, and then periodically PB them in. I also PB them into 2 other Bible software packages. Logos notes will always be intended for a little this and that (my impression).

    hi Denise

thanks for your reply, yes I understand the value PB, but the difference with Notes is the continual instant updating, instant tweaking adding and modifying as you go,...

. and with the favourites menu, there can be the quick access to note files and recollection of what one has and where to find it in a second or two.....( if one has a good treee like structure that makes sense to you, that you can use effectively..)

I'm sure Lgoos did not realise the significance of the use of the notes files and notes features after migrating from Libronix, , and it was only after considerable dialogue and engagement in forums and many in logos  that the SPLIT SCREEN feature was eventually restored from Libronix, which meant very large note files could be used and managed updated and altered in real time as resources in their own right, seperate to PBs

I'm pretty sure it is the same now with NOTE FILE TITLES and the FAVOURITES MENU, Logos does not realise the potential and uses of this feature and may drop it without realising what potential is being lost.

Im hoping Logos really realises what it is doing / losing here....

    hi all

also to add a note from a resource to s specific note file  is so simple and quick with the note file title of logos 7 to choose from amongst the many notes files that may be open in ones work space at any one time? Currently in logos 8 there is a need to further tag etc?

    hi Logos!

it really is a disaster to my workflow in several professional contexts to lose the link between NOTE FILE TITLES and the FAVOURITES Menu.

Can I revert to the former Logos 7 version of note file titles, which open up into the former type of notes please? The Notes of Logos 7 were simple but effective and powerful in the program ( with the favourites menu and user content search). if titled carefully so they displayed in an appropriate order, and if the notes themselves were coloured, inset etc and even with the use of blank notes to create gaps in a file etc.

    Michael,

Sorry about this oversight! Your old favorites should definitely open to the corresponding notebook, and I agree that creating a new favorite with a notebook open should use the notebook title. Hopefully we will be able to ship a fix to both issues soon.

    hi Ed

thanks for your reply and reassurance concerning previously  manually created links in the FAVOURITES opening its corresponding NOTEBOOK.

1/ thanks also for mentioning "creating a new favourite with a notebook open.." Does this refer to dragging a specific NOTEBOOK to create a manual link in the favourites menu?  Will this link carry a (user created) NOTEBOOK Title so it can be automatically identified (with the title is was created with) in the favourites menu?

2/ When creating a note file in a resource, until Logos 7 there was a choice where the note file could be placed, amongst currently open NOTEBOOKS. There was no need for further tagging or fiddling, so notes files could be added rapidly one after the other while quickly reading complex resource texts. it was the speed and ease of use that made this (almost nearly) keep up with ones reading.

Can you reassure also about the INTEGRITY of NOTEBOOKS as independant resources in their own right ( not just a collection of tags or quick post it notes etc, all of which is excellent to some uses).

The NOTEBOOKS as standalone RESOURCES IN THEIR OWN RIGHT:

    A) can be easily added to in real time, tweaked, changed added to, developed... [ this is massively powerful for ongoing projects, multitasking without taking a lot of time)

by using features above 1/ using the favourites folder tree like menu structure to locate a NOTEBOOK when one perhaps cannot remember it by name, but can go there by user defined topic or theme, as the user has already categorised it by manually dragging/linking

and by feature 2/ above - adding a note file to an open  notebook identified by title.

    B) can be used to create stand alone resources with many notes of all things - ordered  into tree like categorisation, by using titling by numbers, colour coding, indentations, capitals and lower cases, even blank notes ( created by adding a white coloured note with a simple "full stop" ie . etc) when used with the SPLIT SCREEN...

    - notefiles can just be user notes etc not necessarily linked,

    - can also cross reference to a BOOK RESOURCE to help read it, and anaylse etc

    - AND there is so so so much more that can be done with NOTEBOOKS with TITLES when used as standalone independant resources, [ which cannot be done with PBs and much much more than simple post it notes... it is all about fairly basic but rigorous organisation and categorisation, and Logos becomes perhaps a more serious tool than even many at  yet Logos realise???

can I keep the integrity of NOTEBOOKS with TITLES to be used as independent resources as per Logos 7??

How clear are the above points? if you need screen shots that's tricky as I've lost the functionality..!!

hi Ed is it possible to have two seperate resources..

    .keeping the (old)

NOTEBOOKS with TITLES working without losing functionality from logos 7 as a seperate resource - called notebooks ( with note files)

There is no need to do much with them, except a search box displaying them all in a list would be nice, and collapsable menus in split screen would be nice as well, but not essential

    and have the ( new)

NOTES with TAGS/ANCHORS working as a new seperate resource called notes

there is no need to migrate the (old) notebooks into the (new) notes? users can choose how to use them in the future? ( unless there was a migration option for users to choose from?)

then it would be amazing to have both...!!!.

Is it possible Logos does not realise the enormous use and power of the notebooks as standalone resources? I'm sure I've not atall exhausted possibitlies, but I'm sure no one aware of how I'm using them would want to reduce their functionality from the Logos programme.....

going back to Libronix in 2004  in have over 100,000 note files in over 1000 notebooks, in a wide range of applications styles and functions,  all meticulously linked into the favourites menu often multiple times,  I use them all the time, access them in an instant- for nerw and ongoing projects.... and have barely started, its amazing

    hi Ed

the link from (previously created) favourites to open a specila note has appeared, thanks for the fix

wha about he reverse? can specific NOTEBOOKS  be dragged to the FAVOURITES menu as before? ( carrying the note title into the favourites menu  without extra work)

    best wishes

    hi Ed

any idea when the upgrade to restore the Logos notes to their previous functionality will be done?

I'm really stumped since losing the Logos 7 notes functionality, in my work in several contexts.

hi Ed I appreciate now a link in favourites opens the resource. But what about Creating a note into an individual NOTE FILE directly after right clicking the resource? ( Has this description made sense?) Is this coming along aswell? Any idea when?

    thanks
