Accidental Closure of Tabs

Is anyone else really annoyed by accidentally closing tabs in Logos 8 because the close 'x' icon now sits next to the book cover image in each tab header and if you don't position your cursor EXACTLY on the book cover image and are a little to far to the right you end up closing the tab. I have done it so many times and it is really annoying; and so is the need to have to scroll right to access tabs which previously fitted in the pane!

Another voice to add to the 'complaints' about the new tab structure in Logos 8 having tabs which are too large and which also have the close icon in them.

The closest I can get to having this be an accurate statement is with the inactive tabs when I have enough tabs in a pane to enter 'carousel mode'. The active tab is persistently showing the short resource title (between the icon and the close x). Also, linkset icons will always be between.

In my screenshots, you can see that the close x active zone is a respectable distance from the resource icon.

Also, are you aware that you can reopen a closed tab by right-clicking on an open tab and choosing "Reopen closed tab"?

My biggest gripe related to the close X is that it shows (and becomes active) on a partially hidden tab as seen below.

I'm aware this isn't responding to problems with closing tabs accidentally, but I just wanted to ensure you know you could reopen them!

To reopen last closed tab you can also use keyboard shortcut.

I don't remember ever accidentally closing a tab but this is a good reminder in case I ever do.

I concur Mark that the current design has issues that need to be addressed. I am glad there is a way to reopen a closed tab. I believe your concern has been addressed already. We will see how FL choses to address them.

This happens to me all the time and I have to reopen the book.

Thanks for the replies and those who pointed to the re-open a tab command which I didn't know about - that is helpful. It is also nice to see that you can issue the command multiple times and it will re-open the tabs in the reverse order that they were closed. A nice feature I wasn't aware of so thanks to Graham for that tip.

I also realise that many will not see this as a 'problem' because it is clearly not as much of an issue if you only have a few tabs open. The 'problem' really appears when you have a dozen or more tabs open in a pane and the headers are compressed so that all you can often see is the book cover icon and (often) no 'x' icon. Other posts have talked about the link set letters sometimes appearing and sometimes not, and abbreviated book titles sometimes appearing and sometimes not). Part of the problem when you have lots of tabs is that the 'x' icon does not actually show - it IS there but the space where it actually is blank until you hover over it (also mentioned in other posts). But if you move the cursor to the tab and click before ensuing that you aren't accidentally located over the 'x' icon, which as I said appears as you move over it, you end up closing the tab.

I think that's why I've not seen this as an issue. Now I understand what you are experiencing if you have that many tabs open.

Maybe Bruce or the other old-timers remember better than me. I thought L4 had this same issue; they brought it back again?

Reuben the OP did not ask you to challenge their experience of the software. For the OP’s sake I am glad many others validated the issue. By all means say you haven’t experienced this particular issue if you can‘t help yourself but don‘t go on to questIon the accuracy but the OP’s experience based upon your experience. That is too small a sample size to base your conclusion upon.

For those who are not seeing what the screen looks like when you have lots of tabs open the attached image shows the tabs and the space taken up by the missing 'x' close icons (except in the active tabs). Also because of the number of tabs, the compressed nature of them, and the space taken up by the 'x' icon (whether visible or not), none of the link set letters show (some of the resources are in link set A and some in link set B but you wouldn't know that without going into the menu pane for each resource or closing lots of the tabs so that the header is larger for each.

none of the link set letters show

There seems to be a disparity here between Mac and Windows since the linkset icons never disappear for me no matter how many tabs I have open.

the space taken up by the missing 'x' close icons

Disclosure: I was one of the ones who pushed for hiding the x on inactive tabs except for hover because the UI looked really busy when showing all of them.

There've been a number of complaints about the space being retained for the x. Perhaps a solution (likely more difficult to implement) would be to shrink the tab accordingly when the x gets hidden. Hover would than expand the tab in order to show the x. The benefit of this approach is that when you move your cursor to a tab the x would appear but not be under your cursor. This would allow more tabs in a panel before compressing to the point of suppressing the short titles and/or linkset icons. This is not a perfect solution and I'm sure others will strongly disagree with me, these are just possibilities that I'm throwing out as I "think aloud".

Thanks for your reply Reuben. If you are not seeing the link letters disappear then there is clearly a difference between the Mac and Windows versions. - The Windows version may have a problem! If I closed some of my tabs then some of the remaining tabs would have the link letter but others wouldn't.

I don't have any real issue with the 'x' icon not showing (I think it would certainly look cluttered if they were all there). I was happy with not having the 'x' icon showing in Logos 7 and using a right-mouse click drop-down tab to close menus,  but obviously some people wanted it more readily available. I actually don't mind your 'thinking out-loud' suggestion of shrinking the tab when the 'x' is hidden and then expanding it when either hovering over it or moving to that tab. In order to reduce processing and dynamic expansion and contraction of the tab when hovering (which may have performance issues) it may be better to only expand a tab to include its 'x' icon (and perhaps the link letter) when the tab becomes active. That would mean that you would have to click on the tab before seeing the 'x' icon (rather than just hovering over it and it appearing, but I would have thought that running the mouse across the list of tab headers with them dynamically expanding and contracting might be problematic. I'd be interested to see what Faithlife and others think of your suggestion (and my suggested alternative).

I'm afraid that the conclusion could be that the Mac version has the problem. I can't find the correct post right now, but as I recall the resource icon was the only thing that was supposed to never disappear. Personally, I prefer the linkset staying (like I have it now ;-)).

I really don't think expanding/contracting (or even moving adjacent tabs accordingly) would take any significant amount of processing power. I'd rather not the close x being limited to the active tab, but on the other hand, I frequently close lots of tabs simultaneously by right-clicking on my 'anchor' resource and choosing "close other tabs", so I'd prefer your alternative to having the space being persistent.

You can also close a tab by right clicking! This is preferable to having a close X that can be accidentally activated whether visible or not.

I am having this problem as well. It is way too easy to accidentally close a tab when trying to switch between tabs. This makes the user experience when studying in version 8 VERY frustrating compared to studying in version 7.

This thread did help me learn how to open the last closed resource and the shortcut, but this issue really drives me crazy.

I hoped this would be fixed with the new update.

  • I agree this design choice is frustrating as translator who simultaneously uses many tabs.  Despite being able re-open tabs it's still frustrating.  I would really appreciate a toggle option to allow me to turn off the X in inactive tabs, that way this will not affect those who want to retain this design feature but would relieve frustration for those of us who really do!

As one who started in Logos 2.0 Beta, and now over $10K, here’s my two shekels.

It’s not Logos’ fault I like to have 50+ tabs open. On a 13” MBP icons are very small, accidental closures too often.
IF at all possible, migrate to a larger screen, and / or figure out how to do “layers.”
I now use a 27” iMac at home, where in both Mac Catalina & Win10 [via VMWare Fusion 11.5] it is possible to snap windows to half screen, appearing to have 2 monitors [w/ Mac Magnet]. I can have Logos on left, MSWord on right. Or Logos in both halves, just like two monitors. I’ve learned to save layouts with different names for 27" or 13”, as they do appear differently.
Instead of having all windows on one layer, Alt-Tab or Cmd-Tab to different layers. They can’t be read all at same time, so figure out which ones go ‘behind,’ or to a different layer.

I link Bibles to B, Concordances to C (Strong’s, BrillDAG, DBL etc), Dictionaries to D, Encyclopedia to E, Auxilary info to A, Duplicated Bibles to F. Duplicate a Bible to other screen half, send links to that so the Bible being studied stays put.
As pointed out in recent Logos webinar, another solution is 2 (or more) monitors.

I hope this may help those who really want to know and walk with The Most High Eternal One (Amos 3:3), and YHWH in The Flesh – His son Jesus Christ Yeshua ha Meshiach. Information must become Transformation or we have big head / little heart. We must keep moving from milk to full maturity (He6:1,2; Ep4:13b; Jn4:34).

Add me to the list of users who experiences frequent and unintended tab closings. As previously suggested, perhaps the right-click closure option could be maintained while either the closing "x" could be removed, or disabled through settings.
