Statistics: How can I count all the words in a chapter of the Greek NT?

I am preparing a set of lectures in NT Greek. I want to be able:

a) to get the total number of words in each chapter of a book

b) to get the total number of new words in each chapter (I already know how to do this, though it is laborious).

I want to do this so that students can easily see that their hard work pays off early on and so that they can gauge their progress in working though a book.

You could copy/paste the chapter into a wordprocessor that counts the words in a file. I think most wordprocessors do that.

There may be many better ways, but an idea I just had was to open an Interlinear that can display Strongs numbers, and then turn all the other layers off. In the example below, I think its based on NA27 but you would need to check, depending on your needs.

If you was going to copy-N-paste portions into some kind of program to count words etc, it might be a whole lot easier to use numbers than greek text. Someone that can code a little perl, VB or some scripting or macro rules could then process these numbers into counts of all kinds.

I assume this keys off the lemma, rather than the word in the form its used in the text. Of course, you are now working with the Strongs coding of the Interlinear rather than the actual greek NT itself. Depending on the level of your needs, this idea might be useful, or useless. Up to you ...

(I'll leave for others to determine if this creates copyright or related issues with using the text in these kinds of ways)

Yes, copy and paste into Word for this, I think. If you mean number of different words per chapter, that's a different issue.

Do you mean new lemmas or new words? If you really mean new words, you can use the WordList tool, adding a chapter at a time. Each time you add a chapter it will tell you how many new words are added.

Why didn't I think of that? I tried it with the Gospel of John. By deleting the 21 chapter numbers (not the verse numbers) my word processor came up with 15,639 words. Felix Just (http://catholic-resources.org/Bible/NT-Statistics-Greek.htm) has 15,635. I'M HAPPY!

You could also make a custom style in the Copy Bible Verses tool that doesn't have any chapter or verse markings to save you a step when you go from Logos to the word processor.
